SN 45.40 The Spiritual Path (2nd) – Dutiyabrahmacariyasutta

At Sāvatthī.

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Bhikkhū, I will teach you the spiritual path and the goal of the spiritual path.

“Brahmacariyañca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, brahmacariyatthañca.

Listen …

Taṁ suṇātha.

And what is the spiritual path?

Katamañca, bhikkhave, brahmacariyaṁ?

It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṁ—

right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi.

sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi.

This is called the spiritual path.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, brahmacariyaṁ.

And what is the goal of the spiritual path?

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, brahmacariyattho?

The ending of greed, hate, and delusion.

Yo kho, bhikkhave, rāgakkhayo dosakkhayo mohakkhayo—

This is called the goal of the spiritual path.”

ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, brahmacariyattho”ti.

Dasamaṁ.

Paṭipattivaggo catuttho.

Tassuddānaṁ

Paṭipatti paṭipanno ca,

viraddhañca pāraṅgamā;

Sāmaññena ca dve vuttā,

brahmaññā apare duve;
