SN 35.160 On Samādhi at Jīvaka’s Mango Grove – Jīvakambavanasamādhisutta
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha in Jīvaka’s Mango Grove.
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati jīvakambavane.
There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhū:
Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:
“bhikkhavo”ti …pe…
“Bhikkhū, develop samādhi.
“samādhiṁ, bhikkhave, bhāvetha.
For a bhikkhu with samādhi, things become truly clear.
Samāhitassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno yathābhūtaṁ okkhāyati.
And what becomes truly clear?
Kiñca yathābhūtaṁ okkhāyati?
It becomes truly clear that the eye, sights, eye consciousness, and eye contact are anicca. And it also becomes truly clear that the painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact is anicca.
Cakkhuṁ aniccanti yathābhūtaṁ okkhāyati, rūpā aniccāti yathābhūtaṁ okkhāyati, cakkhuviññāṇaṁ aniccanti yathābhūtaṁ okkhāyati, cakkhusamphasso aniccoti yathābhūtaṁ okkhāyati, yampidaṁ cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi aniccanti yathābhūtaṁ okkhāyati …pe…
It becomes truly clear that the ear … nose … tongue … body …
jivhā aniccāti yathābhūtaṁ okkhāyati …pe…
mind, thoughts, mind consciousness, and mind contact are anicca.
mano aniccoti yathābhūtaṁ okkhāyati, dhammā aniccāti yathābhūtaṁ okkhāyati …pe…
And it also becomes truly clear that the painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact is anicca.
yampidaṁ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi aniccanti yathābhūtaṁ okkhāyati.
Bhikkhū, develop samādhi.
Samādhiṁ, bhikkhave, bhāvetha.
For a bhikkhu with samādhi, things become truly clear.”
Samāhitassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno yathābhūtaṁ okkhāyatī”ti.
