SN 35.98 Restraint – Saṁvarasutta

Bhikkhū, I will teach you who is restrained and who is unrestrained.

“Saṁvarañca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, asaṁvarañca.

Listen …

Taṁ suṇātha.

And how is someone unrestrained?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, asaṁvaro hoti?

There are sights known by the eye that are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

Santi, bhikkhave, cakkhuviññeyyā rūpā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā.

If a bhikkhu approves, welcomes, and keeps clinging to them, they should understand:

Tañce bhikkhu abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiṭṭhati, veditabbametaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā:

‘My skillful qualities are declining.

‘parihāyāmi kusalehi dhammehi.

For this is what the Buddha calls decline.’

Parihānañhetaṁ vuttaṁ bhagavatā’ti …pe…

There are sounds … smells … tastes … touches …

santi, bhikkhave, jivhāviññeyyā rasā …pe…

thoughts known by the mind that are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

santi, bhikkhave, manoviññeyyā dhammā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā.

If a bhikkhu approves, welcomes, and keeps clinging to them, they should understand:

For this is what the Buddha calls decline.’

Parihānañhetaṁ vuttaṁ bhagavatā’ti.

This is how someone is unrestrained.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, asaṁvaro hoti.

For this is what the Buddha calls non-decline.’
