MN 113 A Good Person – Sappurisasutta
1.1
So I have heard.
Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
1.2
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
1.3
There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhū,
Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:
1.4
“Bhikkhū!”
“bhikkhavo”ti.
1.5
“Venerable sir,” they replied.
“Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.
1.6
The Buddha said this:
Bhagavā etadavoca:
2.1
“Bhikkhū, I will teach you the qualities of a noble person and the qualities of a bad person.
“sappurisadhammañca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi asappurisadhammañca.
2.2
Listen and pay close attention, I will speak.”
Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.
2.3
“Yes, sir,” they replied.
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.
2.4
The Buddha said this:
Bhagavā etadavoca:
3.1
“And what is a quality of a bad person?
“Katamo ca, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo?
3.2
Take a bad person who has gone forth from an eminent family.
Idha, bhikkhave, asappuriso uccākulā pabbajito hoti.
3.3
They reflect:
So iti paṭisañcikkhati:
3.4
‘I have gone forth from an eminent family, unlike these other bhikkhū.’
‘ahaṁ khomhi uccākulā pabbajito, ime panaññe bhikkhū na uccākulā pabbajitā’ti.
3.5
And they glorify themselves and put others down on account of that.
So tāya uccākulīnatāya attānukkaṁseti, paraṁ vambheti.
3.6
This is a quality of a bad person.
Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.
3.7
A noble person reflects:
Sappuriso ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:

‘It’s not because of one’s eminent family that thoughts of greed, hate, or delusion come to an end.
‘na kho uccākulīnatāya lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, dosadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, mohadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti.

Even if someone has not gone forth from an eminent family,
No cepi uccākulā pabbajito hoti;
3.10
if they practice in line with the teaching, practice properly, and live in line with the teaching, they are worthy of honor and praise for that.’
so ca hoti dhammānudhammappaṭipanno sāmīcippaṭipanno anudhammacārī, so tattha pujjo, so tattha pāsaṁso’ti.
3.11
Keeping only the practice close to their heart, they don’t glorify themselves and put others down on account of their eminent family.
So paṭipadaṁyeva antaraṁ karitvā tāya uccākulīnatāya nevattānukkaṁseti na paraṁ vambheti.
3.12
This is a quality of a noble person.
Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, sappurisadhammo.
4-6.1
Furthermore, take a bad person who has gone forth from a great family …
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso mahākulā pabbajito hoti …pe…
4-6.2
from a wealthy family …
mahābhogakulā pabbajito hoti …pe…
4-6.3
from an extremely wealthy family.
uḷārabhogakulā pabbajito hoti.
4-6.4
They reflect:
So iti paṭisañcikkhati:
4-6.5
‘I have gone forth from an extremely wealthy family, unlike these other bhikkhū.’
‘ahaṁ khomhi uḷārabhogakulā pabbajito, ime panaññe bhikkhū na uḷārabhogakulā pabbajitā’ti.
4-6.6
And they glorify themselves and put others down on account of that.
So tāya uḷārabhogatāya attānukkaṁseti, paraṁ vambheti.
4-6.7
This too is a quality of a bad person.
Ayampi, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.
4-6.8
A noble person reflects:
Sappuriso ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:
4-6.9
‘It’s not because of one’s extremely wealthy family that thoughts of greed, hate, or delusion come to an end.
‘na kho uḷārabhogatāya lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, dosadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, mohadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti.
4-6.10
Even if someone has not gone forth from an extremely wealthy family,
No cepi uḷārabhogakulā pabbajito hoti;
4-6.11
if they practice in line with the teaching, practice properly, and live in line with the teaching, they are worthy of honor and praise for that.’
so ca hoti dhammānudhammappaṭipanno sāmīcippaṭipanno anudhammacārī, so tattha pujjo, so tattha pāsaṁso’ti.
4-6.12
Keeping only the practice close to their heart, they don’t glorify themselves and put others down on account of their extremely wealthy family.
So paṭipadaṁyeva antaraṁ karitvā tāya uḷārabhogatāya nevattānukkaṁseti, na paraṁ vambheti.
4-6.13
This too is a quality of a noble person.
Ayampi, bhikkhave, sappurisadhammo.
7.1
Furthermore, take a bad person who is well-known and famous.
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso ñāto hoti yasassī.
7.2
They reflect:
So iti paṭisañcikkhati:
7.3
‘I’m well-known and famous. These other bhikkhū are obscure and insignificant.’
‘ahaṁ khomhi ñāto yasassī, ime panaññe bhikkhū appaññātā appesakkhā’ti.
7.4
And they glorify themselves and put others down on account of that.
So tena ñattena attānukkaṁseti, paraṁ vambheti.
7.5
This too is a quality of a bad person.
Ayampi, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.
7.6
A noble person reflects:
Sappuriso ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:

‘It’s not because of one’s fame that thoughts of greed, hate, or delusion come to an end.
‘na kho ñattena lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, dosadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, mohadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti.
7.8
Even if someone is not well-known and famous,
No cepi ñāto hoti yasassī;
7.9
if they practice in line with the teaching, practice properly, and live in line with the teaching, they are worthy of honor and praise for that.’
so ca hoti dhammānudhammappaṭipanno sāmīcippaṭipanno anudhammacārī, so tattha pujjo, so tattha pāsaṁso’ti.
7.10
Keeping only the practice close to their heart, they don’t glorify themselves and put others down on account of their fame.
So paṭipadaṁyeva antaraṁ karitvā tena ñattena nevattānukkaṁseti, na paraṁ vambheti.
7.11
This too is a quality of a noble person.
Ayampi, bhikkhave, sappurisadhammo.
8.1
Furthermore, take a bad person who receives robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick.
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso lābhī hoti cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṁ.
8.2
They reflect:
So iti paṭisañcikkhati:
8.3
‘I receive robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick, unlike these other bhikkhū.’
‘ahaṁ khomhi lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṁ, ime panaññe bhikkhū na lābhino cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānan’ti.
8.4
And they glorify themselves and put others down on account of that.
So tena lābhena attānukkaṁseti, paraṁ vambheti.
8.5
This too is a quality of a bad person.
Ayampi, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.
8.6
A noble person reflects:
Sappuriso ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:
8.7
‘It’s not because of one’s material possessions that thoughts of greed, hate, or delusion come to an end.
‘na kho lābhena lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, dosadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, mohadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti.
8.8
Even if someone doesn’t receive robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick,
No cepi lābhī hoti cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṁ;
8.9
if they practice in line with the teaching, practice properly, and live in line with the teaching, they are worthy of honor and praise for that.’
so ca hoti dhammānudhammappaṭipanno sāmīcippaṭipanno anudhammacārī, so tattha pujjo, so tattha pāsaṁso’ti.
8.10
Keeping only the practice close to their heart, they don’t glorify themselves and put others down on account of their material possessions.
So paṭipadaṁyeva antaraṁ karitvā tena lābhena nevattānukkaṁseti, na paraṁ vambheti.
8.11
This too is a quality of a noble person.
Ayampi, bhikkhave, sappurisadhammo.
9.1
Furthermore, take a bad person who is very learned …
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso bahussuto hoti.
9.2
So iti paṭisañcikkhati:
9.3
‘ahaṁ khomhi bahussuto, ime panaññe bhikkhū na bahussutā’ti.
9.4
So tena bāhusaccena attānukkaṁseti, paraṁ vambheti.
9.5
Ayampi, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.
9.6
Sappuriso ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:
9.7
‘na kho bāhusaccena lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, dosadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, mohadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti.
9.8
No cepi bahussuto hoti;
9.9
so ca hoti dhammānudhammappaṭipanno sāmīcippaṭipanno anudhammacārī, so tattha pujjo, so tattha pāsaṁso’ti.
9.10
So paṭipadaṁyeva antaraṁ karitvā tena bāhusaccena nevattānukkaṁseti, na paraṁ vambheti.
9.11
Ayampi, bhikkhave, sappurisadhammo.
10.1
who is an expert in the monastic law …
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso vinayadharo hoti.
10.2
So iti paṭisañcikkhati:
10.3
‘ahaṁ khomhi vinayadharo, ime panaññe bhikkhū na vinayadharā’ti.
10.4
So tena vinayadharattena attānukkaṁseti, paraṁ vambheti.
10.5
Ayampi, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.
10.6
Sappuriso ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:
10.7
‘na kho vinayadharattena lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, dosadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, mohadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti.
10.8
No cepi vinayadharo hoti;
10.9
so ca hoti dhammānudhammappaṭipanno sāmīcippaṭipanno anudhammacārī, so tattha pujjo, so tattha pāsaṁso’ti.
10.10
So paṭipadaṁyeva antaraṁ karitvā tena vinayadharattena nevattānukkaṁseti, na paraṁ vambheti.
10.11
Ayampi, bhikkhave, sappurisadhammo.
11.1
who is a Dhamma teacher …
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso dhammakathiko hoti.
11.2
So iti paṭisañcikkhati:
11.3
‘ahaṁ khomhi dhammakathiko, ime panaññe bhikkhū na dhammakathikā’ti.
11.4
So tena dhammakathikattena attānukkaṁseti, paraṁ vambheti.
11.5
Ayampi, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.
11.6
Sappuriso ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:
11.7
‘na kho dhammakathikattena lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, dosadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, mohadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti.
11.8
No cepi dhammakathiko hoti;
11.9
so ca hoti dhammānudhammappaṭipanno sāmīcippaṭipanno anudhammacārī, so tattha pujjo, so tattha pāsaṁso’ti.
11.10
So paṭipadaṁyeva antaraṁ karitvā tena dhammakathikattena nevattānukkaṁseti, na paraṁ vambheti.
11.11
Ayampi, bhikkhave, sappurisadhammo.
12.1
who dwells in the wilderness …
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso āraññiko hoti.
12.2
So iti paṭisañcikkhati:
12.3
‘ahaṁ khomhi āraññiko ime panaññe bhikkhū na āraññikā’ti.
12.4
So tena āraññikattena attānukkaṁseti, paraṁ vambheti.
12.5
Ayampi, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.
12.6
Sappuriso ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:
12.7
‘na kho āraññikattena lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, dosadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, mohadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti.
12.8
No cepi āraññiko hoti;
12.9
so ca hoti dhammānudhammappaṭipanno sāmīcippaṭipanno anudhammacārī, so tattha pujjo, so tattha pāsaṁso’ti.
12.10
So paṭipadaṁyeva antaraṁ karitvā tena āraññikattena nevattānukkaṁseti, na paraṁ vambheti.

Ayampi, bhikkhave, sappurisadhammo.
13.1
who is a rag robe wearer …
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso paṁsukūliko hoti.
13.2
So iti paṭisañcikkhati:

‘ahaṁ khomhi paṁsukūliko, ime panaññe bhikkhū na paṁsukūlikā’ti.
13.4
So tena paṁsukūlikattena attānukkaṁseti, paraṁ vambheti.
13.5
Ayampi, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.
13.6
Sappuriso ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:
13.7
‘na kho paṁsukūlikattena lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, dosadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, mohadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti.

who eats only almsfood …
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso piṇḍapātiko hoti.
14.2
So iti paṭisañcikkhati:

‘ahaṁ khomhi piṇḍapātiko, ime panaññe bhikkhū na piṇḍapātikā’ti.
14.4
So tena piṇḍapātikattena attānukkaṁseti, paraṁ vambheti.
14.5
Ayampi, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.
14.6
Sappuriso ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:
14.7
‘na kho piṇḍapātikattena lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, dosadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, mohadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti.
14.8
No cepi piṇḍapātiko hoti;
14.9
so ca hoti dhammānudhammappaṭipanno sāmīcippaṭipanno anudhammacārī, so tattha pujjo, so tattha pāsaṁso’ti.
14.10
So paṭipadaṁyeva antaraṁ karitvā tena piṇḍapātikattena nevattānukkaṁseti, na paraṁ vambheti.

15.1
who stays at the root of a tree …
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso rukkhamūliko hoti.
15.2
So iti paṭisañcikkhati:

‘ahaṁ khomhi rukkhamūliko, ime panaññe bhikkhū na rukkhamūlikā’ti.
15.4
So tena rukkhamūlikattena attānukkaṁseti, paraṁ vambheti.
15.5
Ayampi, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.
15.6
Sappuriso ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:
15.7
‘na kho rukkhamūlikattena lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, dosadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, mohadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti.
15.8
No cepi rukkhamūliko hoti;
15.9
so ca hoti dhammānudhammappaṭipanno sāmīcippaṭipanno anudhammacārī, so tattha pujjo, so tattha pāsaṁso’ti.
15.10
So paṭipadaṁyeva antaraṁ karitvā tena rukkhamūlikattena nevattānukkaṁseti, na paraṁ vambheti.

who stays in a charnel ground …

who sleeps wherever they lay their mat …

who eats in one sitting per day.
ekāsaniko hoti.

So iti paṭisañcikkhati:

‘I eat in one sitting per day, unlike these other bhikkhū.’
‘ahaṁ khomhi ekāsaniko, ime panaññe bhikkhū na ekāsanikā’ti.
16-20.8
And they glorify themselves and put others down on account of that.
So tena ekāsanikattena attānukkaṁseti, paraṁ vambheti.
16-20.9
This too is a quality of a bad person.
Ayampi, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.
16-20.10
A noble person reflects:
Sappuriso ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:
16-20.11
‘It’s not because of eating in one sitting per day that thoughts of greed, hate, or delusion come to an end.
‘na kho ekāsanikattena lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, dosadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, mohadhammā vā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti.
16-20.12
Even if someone eats in more than one sitting per day,
No cepi ekāsaniko hoti;
16-20.13
if they practice in line with the teaching, practice properly, and live in line with the teaching, they are worthy of honor and praise for that.’
so ca hoti dhammānudhammappaṭipanno sāmīcippaṭipanno anudhammacārī, so tattha pujjo, so tattha pāsaṁso’ti.
16-20.14
Keeping only the practice close to their heart, they don’t glorify themselves and put others down on account of their eating in one sitting per day.
So paṭipadaṁyeva antaraṁ karitvā tena ekāsanikattena nevattānukkaṁseti, na paraṁ vambheti.
16-20.15
This too is a quality of a noble person.
Ayampi, bhikkhave, sappurisadhammo.
21.1
Furthermore, take a bad person who, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected.
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaṁ savicāraṁ vivekajaṁ pītisukhaṁ paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati.
21.2
They reflect:
So iti paṭisañcikkhati:
21.3
‘I have attained the first absorption, unlike these other bhikkhū.’
‘ahaṁ khomhi paṭhamajjhānasamāpattiyā lābhī, ime panaññe bhikkhū paṭhamajjhānasamāpattiyā na lābhino’ti.
21.4
And they glorify themselves and put others down on account of that.
So tāya paṭhamajjhānasamāpattiyā attānukkaṁseti, paraṁ vambheti.
21.5
This too is a quality of a bad person.
Ayampi, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.
21.6
A noble person reflects:
Sappuriso ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:
21.7
‘The Buddha has spoken of not identifying even with the attainment of the first absorption.
‘paṭhamajjhānasamāpattiyāpi kho atammayatā vuttā bhagavatā.
21.8
For whatever they imagine it is, it turns out to be something else.’
Yena yena hi maññanti tato taṁ hoti aññathā’ti.
21.9
Keeping only non-identification close to their heart, they don’t glorify themselves and put others down on account of their attainment of the first absorption.
So atammayataññeva antaraṁ karitvā tāya paṭhamajjhānasamāpattiyā nevattānukkaṁseti, na paraṁ vambheti.
21.10
This too is a quality of a noble person.
Ayampi, bhikkhave, sappurisadhammo.
22-24.1
Furthermore, take a bad person who, as the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, enters and remains in the second absorption …
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso vitakkavicārānaṁ vūpasamā ajjhattaṁ sampasādanaṁ cetaso ekodibhāvaṁ avitakkaṁ avicāraṁ samādhijaṁ pītisukhaṁ dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ …pe…

catutthaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati.

‘I have attained the fourth absorption, unlike these other bhikkhū.’
‘ahaṁ khomhi catutthajjhānasamāpattiyā lābhī, ime panaññe bhikkhū catutthajjhānasamāpattiyā na lābhino’ti.
22-24.6
And they glorify themselves and put others down on account of that.
So tāya catutthajjhānasamāpattiyā attānukkaṁseti, paraṁ vambheti.
22-24.7
This too is a quality of a bad person.
Ayampi, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.
22-24.8
A noble person reflects:
Sappuriso ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:
22-24.9
‘The Buddha has spoken of not identifying even with the attainment of the fourth absorption.
‘catutthajjhānasamāpattiyāpi kho atammayatā vuttā bhagavatā.
22-24.10

Furthermore, take someone who, going totally beyond perceptions of form, with the ending of perceptions of impingement, not focusing on perceptions of diversity, aware that ‘space is infinite’, enters and remains in the dimension of infinite space …
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso sabbaso rūpasaññānaṁ samatikkamā paṭighasaññānaṁ atthaṅgamā nānattasaññānaṁ amanasikārā ‘ananto ākāso’ti ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ upasampajja viharati.
25.2
So iti paṭisañcikkhati:
25.3
‘ahaṁ khomhi ākāsānañcāyatanasamāpattiyā lābhī, ime panaññe bhikkhū ākāsānañcāyatanasamāpattiyā na lābhino’ti.
25.4
So tāya ākāsānañcāyatanasamāpattiyā attānukkaṁseti, paraṁ vambheti.
25.5
Ayampi, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.
25.6
Sappuriso ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:

‘ākāsānañcāyatanasamāpattiyāpi kho atammayatā vuttā bhagavatā.
25.8
Yena yena hi maññanti tato taṁ hoti aññathā’ti.
25.9
So atammayataññeva antaraṁ karitvā tāya ākāsānañcāyatanasamāpattiyā nevattānukkaṁseti, na paraṁ vambheti.
25.10
Ayampi, bhikkhave, sappurisadhammo.
26.1

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso sabbaso ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ samatikkamma ‘anantaṁ viññāṇan’ti viññāṇañcāyatanaṁ upasampajja viharati.

So iti paṭisañcikkhati:

‘ahaṁ khomhi viññāṇañcāyatanasamāpattiyā lābhī, ime panaññe bhikkhū viññāṇañcāyatanasamāpattiyā na lābhino’ti.

So atammayataññeva antaraṁ karitvā tāya viññāṇañcāyatanasamāpattiyā nevattānukkaṁseti, na paraṁ vambheti.

They reflect:
So iti paṭisañcikkhati:

‘I have attained the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, unlike these other bhikkhū.’
‘ahaṁ khomhi nevasaññānāsaññāyatanasamāpattiyā lābhī, ime panaññe bhikkhū nevasaññānāsaññāyatanasamāpattiyā na lābhino’ti.
28.4
And they glorify themselves and put others down on account of that.
So tāya nevasaññānāsaññāyatanasamāpattiyā attānukkaṁseti, paraṁ vambheti.
28.5
This too is a quality of a bad person.
Ayampi, bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.
28.6
A noble person reflects:
Sappuriso ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:
28.7
‘The Buddha has spoken of not identifying even with the attainment of the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception.
‘nevasaññānāsaññāyatanasamāpattiyāpi kho atammayatā vuttā bhagavatā.
28.8
For whatever they imagine it is, it turns out to be something else.’
Yena yena hi maññanti tato taṁ hoti aññathā’ti.
28.9
Keeping only non-identification close to their heart, they don’t glorify themselves and put others down on account of their attainment of the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception.
So atammayataññeva antaraṁ karitvā tāya nevasaññānāsaññāyatanasamāpattiyā nevattānukkaṁseti, na paraṁ vambheti.
28.10
This too is a quality of a noble person.
Ayampi, bhikkhave, sappurisadhammo.
29.1
Furthermore, take a noble person who, going totally beyond the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, enters and remains in the cessation of perception and feeling. And, having seen with wisdom, their cravings come to an end.
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, sappuriso sabbaso nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṁ samatikkamma saññāvedayitanirodhaṁ upasampajja viharati. Paññāya cassa disvā āsavā parikkhīṇā honti.
29.2
This is a bhikkhu who does not identify with anything, does not identify regarding anything, does not identify through anything.”
Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na kiñci maññati, na kuhiñci maññati, na kenaci maññatī”ti.
29.3
That is what the Buddha said.
Idamavoca bhagavā.
29.4
Satisfied, the bhikkhū were happy with what the Buddha said.
Attamanā te bhikkhū bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandunti.
29.5
Sappurisasuttaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ tatiyaṁ.
