AN 10.170 The Near Shore – Orimasutta

 

1.1

Bhikkhū, I will teach you the near shore and the far shore.

“Orimañca, bhikkhave, tīraṁ desessāmi pārimañca tīraṁ.

1.2

Listen and pay close attention, I will speak. …

And what, bhikkhū, is the near shore? What is the far shore?

katamañca, bhikkhave, orimaṁ tīraṁ, katamañca pārimaṁ tīraṁ?

1.4

Killing living creatures is the near shore, bhikkhū, and not killing living creatures is the far shore.

Pāṇātipāto, bhikkhave, orimaṁ tīraṁ, pāṇātipātā veramaṇī pārimaṁ tīraṁ.

1.5

Stealing is the near shore, and not stealing is the far shore.

Adinnādānaṁ orimaṁ tīraṁ, adinnādānā veramaṇī pārimaṁ tīraṁ.

1.6

Sexual misconduct is the near shore, and avoiding sexual misconduct is the far shore.

Kāmesumicchācāro orimaṁ tīraṁ, kāmesumicchācārā veramaṇī pārimaṁ tīraṁ.

1.7

Lying is the near shore, and not lying is the far shore.

Musāvādo orimaṁ tīraṁ, musāvādā veramaṇī pārimaṁ tīraṁ.

1.8

Divisive speech is the near shore, and avoiding divisive speech is the far shore.

Pisuṇā vācā orimaṁ tīraṁ, pisuṇāya vācāya veramaṇī pārimaṁ tīraṁ.

1.9

Harsh speech is the near shore, and avoiding harsh speech is the far shore.

Pharusā vācā orimaṁ tīraṁ, pharusāya vācāya veramaṇī pārimaṁ tīraṁ.

1.10

Talking nonsense is the near shore, and avoiding talking nonsense is the far shore.

Samphappalāpo orimaṁ tīraṁ, samphappalāpā veramaṇī pārimaṁ tīraṁ.

1.11

Covetousness is the near shore, and contentment is the far shore.

Abhijjhā orimaṁ tīraṁ, anabhijjhā pārimaṁ tīraṁ.

1.12

Ill will is the near shore, and good will is the far shore.

Byāpādo orimaṁ tīraṁ, abyāpādo pārimaṁ tīraṁ.

1.13

Wrong view is the near shore, and right view is the far shore.

Micchādiṭṭhi orimaṁ tīraṁ, sammādiṭṭhi pārimaṁ tīraṁ.

1.14

This is the near shore, and this is the far shore.

Idaṁ kho, bhikkhave, orimaṁ tīraṁ, idaṁ pārimaṁ tīranti.

2.1

Few are those among humans

Appakā te manussesu,

2.2

who cross to the far shore.

ye janā pāragāmino;

2.3

The rest just run

Athāyaṁ itarā pajā,

2.4

around on the near shore.

tīramevānudhāvati.

3.1

When the teaching is well explained,

Ye ca kho sammadakkhāte,

3.2

those who practice accordingly

dhamme dhammānuvattino;

3.3

are the ones who will cross over

Te janā pāramessanti,

3.4

Death’s domain so hard to pass.

maccudheyyaṁ suduttaraṁ.

4.1

Rid of dark qualities,

Kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ vippahāya,

4.2

an astute person should develop the bright.

sukkaṁ bhāvetha paṇḍito;

4.3

Leaving home behind

Okā anokamāgamma,

4.4

for the seclusion so hard to enjoy,

viveke yattha dūramaṁ.

5.1

you should try to find delight there,

Tatrābhiratimiccheyya,

5.2

having left behind sensual pleasures.

hitvā kāme akiñcano;

5.3

With no possessions, an astute person

Pariyodapeyya attānaṁ,

5.4

should cleanse themselves of mental corruptions.

cittaklesehi paṇḍito.

6.1

And those whose minds are rightly developed

Yesaṁ sambodhiyaṅgesu,

6.2

in the awakening factors;

sammā cittaṁ subhāvitaṁ;

6.3

letting go of attachments,

Ādānapaṭinissagge,

6.4

they delight in not grasping.

anupādāya ye ratā;

6.5

With defilements ended, brilliant,

Khīṇāsavā jutimanto,

6.6

they are extinguished in this world.”

te loke parinibbutā”ti.
