AN 10.118 The Near Shore – Orimatīrasutta
1.1
“Bhikkhū, I will teach you the near shore and the far shore.
“Orimañca, bhikkhave, tīraṁ desessāmi pārimañca tīraṁ.
1.2
Listen and pay close attention, I will speak.”
Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.
1.3
“Yes, sir,” they replied.
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.
1.4
The Buddha said this:
Bhagavā etadavoca:
2.1
“And what, bhikkhū, is the near shore? What is the far shore?
“Katamañca, bhikkhave, orimaṁ tīraṁ, katamañca pārimaṁ tīraṁ?
2.2
Wrong view is the near shore, and right view is the far shore. …
Micchādiṭṭhi orimaṁ tīraṁ, sammādiṭṭhi pārimaṁ tīraṁ …pe…
2.3
Wrong freedom is the near shore, and right freedom is the far shore.
micchāvimutti orimaṁ tīraṁ, sammāvimutti pārimaṁ tīraṁ.
2.4
This is the near shore, and this is the far shore.
Idaṁ kho, bhikkhave, orimaṁ tīraṁ, idaṁ pārimaṁ tīranti.
3.1
Few are those among humans
Appakā te manussesu,
3.2
who cross to the far shore.
ye janā pāragāmino;
3.3
The rest just run
Athāyaṁ itarā pajā,
3.4
around on the near shore.
tīramevānudhāvati.
4.1
When the teaching is well explained,
Ye ca kho sammadakkhāte,
4.2
those who practice accordingly
dhamme dhammānuvattino;
4.3
are the ones who will cross over
Te janā pāramessanti,
4.4
Death’s domain so hard to pass.
maccudheyyaṁ suduttaraṁ.
5.1
Rid of dark qualities,
Kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ vippahāya,
5.2
an astute person should develop the bright.
sukkaṁ bhāvetha paṇḍito;
5.3
Leaving home behind
Okā anokamāgamma,
5.4
for the seclusion so hard to enjoy,
viveke yattha dūramaṁ.
6.1
you should try to find delight there,
Tatrābhiratimiccheyya,
6.2
having left behind sensual pleasures.
hitvā kāme akiñcano;
6.3
With no possessions, an astute person
Pariyodapeyya attānaṁ,
6.4
should cleanse themselves of mental corruptions.
cittaklesehi paṇḍito.
7.1
And those whose minds are rightly developed
Yesaṁ sambodhiyaṅgesu,
7.2
in the awakening factors;
sammā cittaṁ subhāvitaṁ;
7.3
letting go of attachments,
Ādānapaṭinissagge,
7.4
they delight in not grasping.
anupādāya ye ratā;
7.5
With defilements ended, brilliant,
Khīṇāsavā jutimanto,
7.6
they are extinguished in this world.”
te loke parinibbutā”ti.
