AN 10.116 With Ajita – Ajitasutta

 

1.1

Then the wanderer Ajita went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

Atha kho ajito paribbājako yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi.

1.2

When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha,

Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho ajito paribbājako bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

“Master Gotama, we have a spiritual companion called ‘The Philosopher’.

“Amhākaṁ, bho gotama, paṇḍito nāma sabrahmacārī.

2.2

He has worked out around five hundred arguments by which followers of other paths will know when they’ve been refuted.”

Tena pañcamattāni cittaṭṭhānasatāni cintitāni, yehi aññatitthiyā upāraddhāva jānanti upāraddhasmā”ti.

3.1

Then the Buddha said to the bhikkhū,

Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:

3.2

Bhikkhū, do you remember this philosopher’s points?”

“dhāretha no tumhe, bhikkhave, paṇḍitavatthūnī”ti?

3.3

“Now is the time, Blessed One! Now is the time, Holy One!

“Etassa, bhagavā, kālo etassa, sugata, kālo

3.4

Let the Buddha speak and the bhikkhū will remember it.”

yaṁ bhagavā bhāseyya, bhagavato sutvā bhikkhū dhāressantī”ti.

4.1

“Well then, bhikkhū, listen and pay close attention, I will speak.”

“Tena hi, bhikkhave, suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.

4.2

“Yes, sir,” they replied.

“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.

4.3

The Buddha said this:

Bhagavā etadavoca:

5.1

Bhikkhū, take a certain person who rebuts and quashes unprincipled statements with unprincipled statements. This delights an unprincipled assembly,

“Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco adhammikena vādena adhammikaṁ vādaṁ abhiniggaṇhāti abhinippīḷeti, tena ca adhammikaṁ parisaṁ rañjeti.

who make a dreadful racket:

Tena sā adhammikā parisā uccāsaddamahāsaddā hoti:

5.3

‘He’s a true philosopher! He’s a true philosopher!’

‘paṇḍito vata bho, paṇḍito vata bho’ti.

6.1

Another person rebuts and quashes principled statements with unprincipled statements. This delights an unprincipled assembly,

Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco adhammikena vādena dhammikaṁ vādaṁ abhiniggaṇhāti abhinippīḷeti, tena ca adhammikaṁ parisaṁ rañjeti.

who make a dreadful racket:

7.1

‘paṇḍito vata bho, paṇḍito vata bho’ti.

8.1

Bhikkhū, you should know bad dhamma and good dhamma.

Adhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo dhammo ca;

8.2

And you should know bad results and good results.

anattho ca veditabbo attho ca.

8.3

Knowing these things, your practice should follow the good dhamma with good results.

Adhammañca viditvā dhammañca, anatthañca viditvā atthañca yathā dhammo yathā attho tathā paṭipajjitabbaṁ.

9.1

So what are bad dhamma? What are good dhamma? What are bad results? And what are good results?

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, adhammo, katamo ca dhammo, katamo ca anattho, katamo ca attho?

9.2

Wrong view is a bad principle.

Micchādiṭṭhi, bhikkhave, adhammo;

9.3

Right view is a good principle.

sammādiṭṭhi dhammo;

9.4

And the many bad, unskillful qualities produced by wrong view are bad results.

ye ca micchādiṭṭhipaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti, ayaṁ anattho;

9.5

And the many skillful qualities fully developed because of right view are good results.

sammādiṭṭhipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, ayaṁ attho.

10.1

Wrong thought is a bad principle.

Micchāsaṅkappo, bhikkhave, adhammo;

Right thought is a good principle. …

10.3

Wrong speech is a bad principle.

micchāvācā, bhikkhave, adhammo;

10.4

Right speech is a good principle. …

10.5

Wrong action is a bad principle.

micchākammanto, bhikkhave, adhammo;

10.6

Right action is a good principle. …

Wrong livelihood is a bad principle.

micchāājīvo, bhikkhave, adhammo;

10.8

Right livelihood is a good principle. …

Wrong effort is a bad principle.

micchāvāyāmo, bhikkhave, adhammo;

10.10

Right effort is a good principle. …

Wrong mindfulness is a bad principle.

Right mindfulness is a good principle. …

Wrong samādhi is a bad principle.

micchāsamādhi, bhikkhave adhammo;

Right samādhi is a good principle. …

Wrong knowledge is a bad principle.

micchāñāṇaṁ, bhikkhave, adhammo;

10.16

Right knowledge is a good principle. …

sammāñāṇaṁ dhammo.

11.1

Wrong freedom is a bad principle.

Micchāvimutti, bhikkhave, adhammo;

11.2

Right freedom is a good principle.

sammāvimutti dhammo;

11.3

And the many bad, unskillful qualities produced by wrong freedom are bad results.

ye ca micchāvimuttipaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti, ayaṁ anattho;

11.4

And the many skillful qualities fully developed because of right freedom are good results.

sammāvimuttipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, ayaṁ attho.

12.1

‘You should know bad dhamma and good dhamma.

‘Adhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo dhammo ca;

12.2

And you should know bad results and good results.

anattho ca veditabbo attho ca.

12.3

Knowing these things, your practice should follow the good dhamma with good results.’

Adhammañca viditvā dhammañca, anatthañca viditvā atthañca yathā dhammo yathā attho tathā paṭipajjitabban’ti,

12.4

That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.”

iti yaṁ taṁ vuttaṁ, idametaṁ paṭicca vuttan”ti.
