AN 10.12 Five Factors – Pañcaṅgasutta

“Bhikkhū, in this teaching and training a bhikkhu who has given up five factors and possesses five factors is called consummate, accomplished, a supreme person.
“Pañcaṅgavippahīno, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcaṅgasamannāgato imasmiṁ dhammavinaye ‘kevalī vusitavā uttamapuriso’ti vuccati.

And how has a bhikkhu given up five factors?
Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcaṅgavippahīno hoti?
1.3
It’s when a bhikkhu has given up sensual desire, ill will, dullness and drowsiness, restlessness and remorse, and doubt.
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno kāmacchando pahīno hoti, byāpādo pahīno hoti, thinamiddhaṁ pahīnaṁ hoti, uddhaccakukkuccaṁ pahīnaṁ hoti, vicikicchā pahīnā hoti.

That’s how a bhikkhu has given up five factors.
Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcaṅgavippahīno hoti.

And how does a bhikkhu have five factors?
Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcaṅgasamannāgato hoti?
2.2
It’s when a bhikkhu has the entire spectrum of an adept’s ethics, samādhi, wisdom, freedom, and knowledge and vision of freedom.
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu asekhena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena samādhikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena paññākkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena vimuttikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena vimuttiñāṇadassanakkhandhena samannāgato hoti.

That’s how a bhikkhu has five factors.
Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcaṅgasamannāgato hoti.
3.1
In this teaching and training a bhikkhu who has given up five factors and possesses five factors is called consummate, accomplished, a supreme person.
Pañcaṅgavippahīno kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcaṅgasamannāgato imasmiṁ dhammavinaye ‘kevalī vusitavā uttamapuriso’ti vuccati.

Sensual desire, ill will,
Kāmacchando ca byāpādo,
4.2
dullness and drowsiness,
thinamiddhañca bhikkhuno;
4.3
restlessness, and doubt
Uddhaccaṁ vicikicchā ca,
4.4
are not found in a bhikkhu at all.
sabbasova na vijjati.
5.1
One like this is accomplished
Asekhena ca sīlena,
5.2
in an adept’s ethics,
asekhena samādhinā;
5.3
an adept’s samādhi,
Vimuttiyā ca sampanno,
5.4
and freedom and knowledge.
ñāṇena ca tathāvidho.
6.1
Possessing these five factors,
Sa ve pañcaṅgasampanno,
6.2
and rid of five factors,
pañca aṅge vivajjayaṁ;
6.3
in this teaching and training
Imasmiṁ dhammavinaye,
6.4
they’re called ‘consummate’.”
kevalī iti vuccatī”ti.
