AN 8.16 Going on a Mission – Dūteyyasutta

“Bhikkhū, a bhikkhu with eight qualities is worthy of going on a mission.
“Aṭṭhahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu dūteyyaṁ gantumarahati.

What eight?
Katamehi aṭṭhahi?
1.3
It’s a bhikkhu who learns and educates others. They memorize and remember. They understand and help others understand. They’re skilled at knowing what’s on topic and what isn’t. And they don’t cause quarrels.
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sotā ca hoti, sāvetā ca, uggahetā ca, dhāretā ca, viññātā ca, viññāpetā ca, kusalo ca sahitāsahitassa, no ca kalahakārako—

A bhikkhu with these eight qualities is worthy of going on a mission.
imehi kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭhahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu dūteyyaṁ gantumarahati.

Having eight qualities Sāriputta is worthy of going on a mission.
Aṭṭhahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato sāriputto dūteyyaṁ gantumarahati.

What eight?

Having these eight qualities Sāriputta is worthy of going on a mission.
Imehi kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭhahi dhammehi samannāgato sāriputto dūteyyaṁ gantumarahatīti.
2.1
They don’t tremble when arriving
Yo ve na byathati patvā,
2.2
at an assembly of fierce debaters.
parisaṁ uggavādiniṁ;
2.3
They don’t miss out any words,
Na ca hāpeti vacanaṁ,
2.4
or conceal the instructions.
na ca chādeti sāsanaṁ.
3.1
Their words aren’t poisoned,
Asandiddhañca bhaṇati,
3.2
and they don’t tremble when questioned.
Pucchito na ca kuppati;
3.3
Such a bhikkhu
Sa ve tādisako bhikkhu,
3.4
is worthy of going on a mission.”
Dūteyyaṁ gantumarahatī”ti.
