AN 8.15 Stains – Malasutta

“Bhikkhū, there are these eight stains.
“Aṭṭhimāni, bhikkhave, malāni.

What eight?
Katamāni aṭṭha?

Not reciting is the stain of hymns.
Asajjhāyamalā, bhikkhave, mantā;

Neglect is the stain of houses.
anuṭṭhānamalā, bhikkhave, gharā;
1.5
Laziness is the stain of beauty.
malaṁ, bhikkhave, vaṇṇassa kosajjaṁ;
1.6
Negligence is a guard’s stain.
pamādo, bhikkhave, rakkhato malaṁ;
1.7
Misconduct is a woman’s stain.
malaṁ, bhikkhave, itthiyā duccaritaṁ;
1.8
Stinginess is a giver’s stain.
maccheraṁ, bhikkhave, dadato malaṁ;
1.9
Bad, unskillful qualities are a stain in this world and the next.
malā, bhikkhave, pāpakā akusalā dhammā asmiṁ loke paramhi ca;
1.10
Worse than any of these is ignorance, the worst stain of all.
tato, bhikkhave, malā malataraṁ avijjā paramaṁ malaṁ.

These are the eight stains.
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭha malānīti.

The stain of houses is neglect.
anuṭṭhānamalā gharā;

Laziness is the stain of beauty.
Malaṁ vaṇṇassa kosajjaṁ,

A guard’s stain is negligence.
pamādo rakkhato malaṁ.
3.1
Misconduct is a woman’s stain.
Malitthiyā duccaritaṁ,
3.2
A giver’s stain is stinginess.
maccheraṁ dadato malaṁ;
3.3
Bad qualities are a stain
Malā ve pāpakā dhammā,
3.4
in this world and the next.
asmiṁ loke paramhi ca;
3.5
But a worse stain than these
Tato malā malataraṁ,
3.6
is ignorance, the worst stain of all.”
avijjā paramaṁ malan”ti.
