AN 5.141 Scorn – Avajānātisutta

“Bhikkhū, these five people are found in the world.
“Pañcime, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ.

What five?
Katame pañca?
1.3
One gives then scorns, one lives together then scorns, one is gullible for gossip, one is impulsive, and one is dull and stupid.
Datvā avajānāti, saṁvāsena avajānāti, ādheyyamukho hoti, lolo hoti, mando momūho hoti.
2.1
And how does a person give then scorn?
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo datvā avajānāti?
2.2
It’s when a person gives someone robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick.
Idha, bhikkhave, puggalo puggalassa deti cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhāraṁ.
2.3
They think:
Tassa evaṁ hoti:

‘I give;
‘ahaṁ demi;
2.5
this one receives.’
ayaṁ paṭiggaṇhātī’ti.
2.6
They give to that person, then they scorn them.
Tamenaṁ datvā avajānāti.

That’s how a person gives then scorns.
Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo datvā avajānāti.
3.1
And how does a person live together then scorn?
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo saṁvāsena avajānāti?
3.2
It’s when a person lives with someone else for two or three years.
Idha, bhikkhave, puggalo puggalena saddhiṁ saṁvasati dve vā tīṇi vā vassāni.
3.3
They live together with that person, then they scorn them.
Tamenaṁ saṁvāsena avajānāti.
3.4
That’s how a person live together then scorns.
Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo saṁvāsena avajānāti.
4.1
And how is a person gullible for gossip?
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo ādheyyamukho hoti?
4.2
It’s when they’re very quick to believe what a certain person says in praise or criticism of another.
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo parassa vaṇṇe vā avaṇṇe vā bhāsiyamāne taṁ khippaññeva adhimuccitā hoti.
4.3
That’s how a person is gullible for gossip.
Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo ādheyyamukho hoti.
5.1
And how is a person impulsive?
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo lolo hoti?
5.2
It’s when a certain person is fickle in faith, devotion, fondness, and confidence.
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ittarasaddho hoti ittarabhattī ittarapemo ittarappasādo.
5.3
That’s how a person is impulsive.
Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo lolo hoti.
6.1
And how is a person dull and stupid?
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo mando momūho hoti?
6.2
It’s when they don’t know the difference between qualities that are skillful and unskillful, blameworthy and blameless, inferior and superior, and those on the side of dark and bright.
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo kusalākusale dhamme na jānāti, sāvajjānavajje dhamme na jānāti, hīnappa�īte dhamme na jānāti, kaṇhasukkasappaṭibhāge dhamme na jānāti.
6.3
That’s how a person is dull and stupid.
Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo mando momūho hoti.
6.4
These are the five people found in the world.”
Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmin”ti.
