AN 5.40 Great Sal Trees – Mahāsālaputtasutta

Bhikkhū, great sal trees grow in five ways supported by the Himalayas, the king of mountains.

“Himavantaṁ, bhikkhave, pabbatarājaṁ nissāya mahāsālā pañcahi vaḍḍhīhi vaḍḍhanti.

What five?

Katamāhi pañcahi?

1.3

The branches, leaves, and foliage;

Sākhāpattapalāsena vaḍḍhanti;

1.4

the bark;

tacena vaḍḍhanti;

1.5

the shoots;

papaṭikāya vaḍḍhanti;

1.6

the softwood;

pheggunā vaḍḍhanti;

1.7

and the hardwood.

sārena vaḍḍhanti.

1.8

Great sal trees grow in these five ways supported by the Himalayas, the king of mountains.

Himavantaṁ, bhikkhave, pabbatarājaṁ nissāya mahāsālā imāhi pañcahi vaḍḍhīhi vaḍḍhanti.

1.9

In the same way, a family grows in five ways supported by a family head with faith.

Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, saddhaṁ kulaputtaṁ nissāya antojano pañcahi vaḍḍhīhi vaḍḍhati.

1.10

What five?

Katamāhi pañcahi?

1.11

Faith,

Saddhāya vaḍḍhati;

1.12

ethics,

sīlena vaḍḍhati;

1.13

learning,

sutena vaḍḍhati;

1.14

generosity,

cāgena vaḍḍhati;

1.15

and wisdom.

paññāya vaḍḍhati.

1.16

A family grows in these five ways supported by a family head with faith.

Saddhaṁ, bhikkhave, kulaputtaṁ nissāya antojano imāhi pañcahi vaḍḍhīhi vaḍḍhatīti.

2.1

Supported by the mountain crags

Yathā hi pabbato selo,

2.2

in the wilds, the formidable forest,

araññasmiṁ brahāvane;

2.3

the tree grows

Taṁ rukkhā upanissāya,

2.4

to become lord of the forest.

vaḍḍhante te vanappatī.

3.1

So too, when the family head

Tatheva sīlasampannaṁ,

3.2

is ethical and faithful,

Saddhaṁ kulaputtaṁ imaṁ;

3.3

supported by them, they grow:

Upanissāya vaḍḍhanti,

3.4

children, partners, and kin,

Puttadārā ca bandhavā;

3.5

colleagues, relatives,

Amaccā ñātisaṅghā ca,

3.6

and those dependent for their livelihood.

Ye cassa anujīvino.

4.1

Seeing the ethical conduct of the virtuous,

Tyassa sīlavato sīlaṁ,

4.2

the generosity and good deeds,

cāgaṁ sucaritāni ca;

4.3

those who see clearly

Passamānānukubbanti,

4.4

do likewise.

ye bhavanti vicakkhaṇā.

5.1

Having practiced the teaching here,

Idha dhammaṁ caritvāna,

5.2

the path that goes to a good place,

maggaṁ sugatigāminaṁ;

5.3

they delight in the heavenly realm,

Nandino devalokasmiṁ,

5.4

enjoying all the pleasures they desire.”

modanti kāmakāmino”ti.

Dasamaṁ.

5.6

Sumanavaggo catuttho.

6.0

Tassuddānaṁ

6.1

Sumanā cundī uggaho,

6.2

sīho dānānisaṁsako;

6.3

Kālabhojanasaddhā ca,

6.4

puttasālehi te dasāti.
