AN 5.39 A Child – Puttasutta

 

1.1

Bhikkhū, parents see five reasons to wish for the birth of a child in the family.

“Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, ṭhānāni sampassantā mātāpitaro puttaṁ icchanti kule jāyamānaṁ.

What five?

Katamāni pañca?

1.3

Since we looked after them, they’ll look after us.

Bhato vā no bharissati;

1.4

They’ll do their duty for us.

kiccaṁ vā no karissati;

1.5

The family traditions will last.

kulavaṁso ciraṁ ṭhassati;

1.6

They’ll take care of the inheritance.

dāyajjaṁ paṭipajjissati;

1.7

Or else when we have passed away they’ll give an offering on our behalf.

atha vā pana petānaṁ kālaṅkatānaṁ dakkhiṇaṁ anuppadassatīti.

Parents see these five reasons to wish for the birth of a child in the family.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañca ṭhānāni sampassantā mātāpitaro puttaṁ icchanti kule jāyamānanti.

Seeing five reasons,

Pañca ṭhānāni sampassaṁ,

2.2

astute people wish for a child.

puttaṁ icchanti paṇḍitā;

2.3

Since we looked after them, they’ll look after us.

Bhato vā no bharissati,

They’ll do their duty for us.

kiccaṁ vā no karissati.

3.1

The family traditions will last.

Kulavaṁso ciraṁ tiṭṭhe,

3.2

They’ll take care of the inheritance.

dāyajjaṁ paṭipajjati;

3.3

Or else when we have passed away

Atha vā pana petānaṁ,

3.4

they’ll give an offering on our behalf.

dakkhiṇaṁ anuppadassati.

4.1

Seeing these five reasons

Ṭhānānetāni sampassaṁ,

4.2

astute people wish for a child.

puttaṁ icchanti paṇḍitā;

4.3

And so good people,

Tasmā santo sappurisā,

4.4

grateful and thankful,

kataññū katavedino.

5.1

look after their parents,

Bharanti mātāpitaro,

5.2

remembering past deeds.

pubbe katamanussaraṁ;

5.3

They do for their parents,

Karonti nesaṁ kiccāni,

5.4

as their parents did for them in the past.

yathā taṁ pubbakārinaṁ.

6.1

Following their advice, looking after those who raised them,

Ovādakārī bhataposī,

6.2

the family traditions are not lost.

kulavaṁsaṁ ahāpayaṁ;

6.3

Faithful, accomplished in ethics,

Saddho sīlena sampanno,

6.4

such a child is praiseworthy.”

putto hoti pasaṁsiyo”ti.
