“There are these two kinds of welcome.

“Dveme, bhikkhave, santhārā.

What two?

Katame dve?

1.3

Welcome in material things and welcome in the teaching.

Āmisasanthāro ca dhammasanthāro ca.

1.4

These are the two kinds of welcome.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve santhārā.

1.5

The better of these two kinds of welcome is the welcome in the teaching.”

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ santhārānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammasanthāro”ti.

“Dveme, bhikkhave, paṭisanthārā.

1.2

What two?

Katame dve?

1.3

Hospitality in material things and hospitality in the teaching.

Āmisapaṭisanthāro ca dhammapaṭisanthāro ca.

1.4

These are the two kinds of hospitality.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve paṭisanthārā.

1.5

The better of these two kinds of hospitality is hospitality in the teaching.”

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ paṭisanthārānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammapaṭisanthāro”ti.

“Dvemā, bhikkhave, esanā.

What two?

Katamā dve?

1.3

The quest for material things and the quest for the teaching.

Āmisesanā ca dhammesanā ca.

1.4

These are the two quests.

Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve esanā.

1.5

The better of these two quests is the quest for the teaching.”

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imāsaṁ dvinnaṁ esanānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammesanā”ti.

The better of these two searches is the search for the teaching.”

Seeking for material things and seeking for the teaching.

These are the two kinds of seeking.

Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve pariyeṭṭhiyo.

1.5

The better of these two kinds of seeking is seeking for the teaching.”

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imāsaṁ dvinnaṁ pariyeṭṭhīnaṁ yadidaṁ dhammapariyeṭṭhī”ti.

Worship of material things and worship of the teaching.

Āmisapūjā ca dhammapūjā ca.

These are the two kinds of worship.

Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve pūjā.

1.5

The better of these two kinds of worship is worship of the teaching.”

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imāsaṁ dvinnaṁ pūjānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammapūjā”ti.

“Dvemāni, bhikkhave, ātitheyyāni.

What two?

Katamāni dve?

1.3

Serving guests with material things and serving guests with the teaching.

Āmisātitheyyañca dhammātitheyyañca.

1.4

These are the two ways of serving guests.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve ātitheyyāni.

1.5

The better of these two ways of serving guests is to serve them with the teaching.”

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ ātitheyyānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammātitheyyan”ti.

“Dvemā, bhikkhave, iddhiyo.

1.2

What two?

Katamā dve?

1.3

Success in material things and success in the teaching.

Āmisiddhi ca dhammiddhi ca.

1.4

These are the two successes.

Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve iddhiyo.

1.5

The better of these two successes is success in the teaching.”

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imāsaṁ dvinnaṁ iddhīnaṁ yadidaṁ dhammiddhī”ti.

“Dvemā, bhikkhave, vuddhiyo.

1.2

What two?

1.3

Growth in material things and growth in the teaching.

Āmisavuddhi ca dhammavuddhi ca.

1.4

These are the two kinds of growth.

Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve vuddhiyo.

1.5

The better of these two kinds of growth is growth in the teaching.”

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imāsaṁ dvinnaṁ vuddhīnaṁ yadidaṁ dhammavuddhī”ti.

“Dvemāni, bhikkhave, ratanāni.

What two?

The treasure of material things and the treasure of the teaching.

Āmisaratanañca dhammaratanañca.

1.4

These are the two treasures.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve ratanāni.

1.5

The better of these two treasures is the treasure of the teaching.”

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ ratanānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammaratanan”ti.

“Dveme, bhikkhave, sannicayā.

1.2

What two?

Katame dve?

1.3

Accumulation of material things and accumulation of the teaching.

Āmisasannicayo ca dhammasannicayo ca.

1.4

These are the two kinds of accumulation.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve sannicayā.

1.5

The better of these two kinds of accumulation is the accumulation of the teaching.”

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sannicayānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammasannicayo”ti.

“Dvemāni, bhikkhave, vepullāni.

Increase in material things and increase in the teaching.

Āmisavepullañca dhammavepullañca.

1.4

These are the two kinds of increase.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve vepullāni.

1.5

The better of these two kinds of increase is increase in the teaching.”

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ vepullānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammavepullan”ti.
