SN 52.7 The Ending of Craving – Taṇhākkhayasutta
At Sāvatthī.
Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
There Venerable Anuruddha addressed the bhikkhū:
Tatra kho āyasmā anuruddho bhikkhū āmantesi:
“Reverends, bhikkhū!”
“āvuso bhikkhavo”ti.
“Reverend,” they replied.
“Āvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato anuruddhassa paccassosuṁ.
Anuruddha said this:
Āyasmā anuruddho etadavoca:
“Reverends, when these four kinds of mindfulness meditation are developed and cultivated they lead to the ending of craving.
“Cattārome, āvuso, satipaṭṭhānā bhāvitā bahulīkatā taṇhākkhayāya saṁvattanti.
What four?
Katame cattāro?
It’s when a bhikkhu meditates by observing an aspect of the body …
Idhāvuso, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati …pe…
feelings …
vedanāsu …pe…
mind …
citte …pe…
principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world.
dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ—
When these four kinds of mindfulness meditation are developed and cultivated they lead to the ending of craving.”
ime kho, āvuso, cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvitā bahulīkatā taṇhākkhayāya saṁvattantī”ti.
