SN 50.1–12 Sloping East, Etc. – Balādisutta
“Bhikkhū, there are these five powers.
“Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, balāni.
What five?
Katamāni pañca?
The powers of faith, energy, mindfulness, samādhi, and wisdom.
Saddhābalaṁ, vīriyabalaṁ, satibalaṁ, samādhibalaṁ, paññābalaṁ—
These are the five powers.
imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañca balānīti.
The Ganges river slants, slopes, and inclines to the east.
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, gaṅgā nadī pācīnaninnā pācīnapoṇā pācīnapabbhārā;
In the same way, a bhikkhu who develops and cultivates the five powers slants, slopes, and inclines to extinguishment.
evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañca balāni bhāvento pañca balāni bahulīkaronto nibbānaninno hoti nibbānapoṇo nibbānapabbhāro.
And how does a bhikkhu who develops the five powers slant, slope, and incline to extinguishment?
Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañca balāni bhāvento pañca balāni bahulīkaronto nibbānaninno hoti nibbānapoṇo nibbānapabbhāro?
It’s when a bhikkhu develops the powers of faith,
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddhābalaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ,
energy,
vīriyabalaṁ …pe…
mindfulness,
satibalaṁ …
samādhi,
samādhibalaṁ …
and wisdom, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.
paññābalaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ.
That’s how a bhikkhu who develops and cultivates the five powers slants, slopes, and inclines to extinguishment.”
Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañca balāni bhāvento pañca balāni bahulīkaronto nibbānaninno hoti nibbānapoṇo nibbānapabbhāro”ti.
Dvādasamaṁ.
(To be expanded for each of the different rivers as in SN 45.91–102.)
Gaṅgāpeyyālavaggo paṭhamo.
Six on slanting to the east,
Tassuddānaṁ
and six on slanting to the ocean;
Cha pācīnato ninnā,
these two sixes make twelve,
cha ninnā ca samuddato;
and that’s how this chapter is recited.
Dvete cha dvādasa honti,
