Bhikkhū, there are five higher fetters.

“Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, uddhambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni.

What five?

Katamāni pañca?

Desire for rebirth in the realm of luminous form, desire for rebirth in the formless realm, conceit, restlessness, and ignorance.

Rūparāgo, arūparāgo, māno, uddhaccaṁ, avijjā—

These are the five higher fetters.

imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañcuddhambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni.

The four right efforts should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters.

Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcannaṁ uddhambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya cattāro sammappadhānā bhāvetabbā.

What four?

Katame cattāro?

It’s when a bhikkhu generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities don’t arise. …

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannānaṁ …pe…

so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are completed by development.

uppannānaṁ kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ ṭhitiyā asammosāya bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya bhāvanāya pāripūriyā chandaṁ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṁ ārabhati cittaṁ paggaṇhāti padahati.

These four right efforts should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters.”

Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcannaṁ uddhambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya ime cattāro sammappadhānā bhāvetabbā”ti.

(To be expanded as in SN 45.171–179, with the above as the final discourse.)
