“Bhikkhū, there are these three searches.

“Tisso imā, bhikkhave, esanā.

What three?

Katamā tisso?

The search for sensual pleasures, the search for continued existence, and the search for a spiritual path. …”

Kāmesanā, bhavesanā, brahmacariyesanā”ti vitthāretabbaṁ.

Searches, discriminations, defilements,

Tassuddānaṁ

states of existence, three kinds of suffering,

Esanā vidhā āsavo,

barrenness, stains, and troubles,

Bhavo ca dukkhatā tisso;

feelings, craving, and thirst.

Khilaṁ malañca nīgho ca,
