SN 47.49 Feelings – Vedanāsutta
“Bhikkhū, there are these three feelings.
“Tisso imā, bhikkhave, vedanā.
What three?
Katamā tisso?
Pleasant, painful, and neutral feeling.
Sukhā vedanā, dukkhā vedanā, adukkhamasukhā vedanā—
These are the three feelings.
imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso vedanā.
The four kinds of mindfulness meditation should be developed to completely understand these three feelings.
Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ vedanānaṁ pariññāya cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvetabbā.
What four?
Katame cattāro?
It’s when a bhikkhu meditates by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world.
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ;
They meditate observing an aspect of feelings …
vedanāsu …pe…
mind …
citte …pe…
principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world.
dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.
These four kinds of mindfulness meditation should be developed to completely understand these three feelings.”
Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ vedanānaṁ pariññāya ime cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvetabbā”ti.
