Taṁyeva nidānaṁ.

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaṁ anuruddhaṁ etadavoca:

“Reverend, they speak of this person called ‘an adept’.

“‘asekho, asekho’ti, āvuso anuruddha, vuccati.

How is an adept defined?”

Kittāvatā nu kho, āvuso, asekho hotī”ti?

“Reverends, an adept is someone who has completely developed the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.

“Catunnaṁ kho, āvuso, satipaṭṭhānānaṁ samattaṁ bhāvitattā asekho hoti.

What four?

Katamesaṁ catunnaṁ?

It’s when a bhikkhu meditates by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world.

Idhāvuso, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ;

They meditate observing an aspect of feelings …

citte …pe…

principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world.

dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.

An adept is someone who has completely developed the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.”

Imesaṁ kho, āvuso, catunnaṁ satipaṭṭhānānaṁ samattaṁ bhāvitattā asekho hotī”ti.
