SN 46.46 Poor – Daliddasutta

“Sir, they speak of someone who is ‘poor’.

“‘Daliddo, daliddo’ti, bhante, vuccati.

How is a poor person defined?”

Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, ‘daliddo’ti vuccatī”ti?

Bhikkhu, they’re called poor because they haven’t developed and cultivated the seven awakening factors.

“Sattannaṁ kho, bhikkhu, bojjhaṅgānaṁ abhāvitattā abahulīkatattā ‘daliddo’ti vuccati.

What seven?

Katamesaṁ sattannaṁ?

The awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, samādhi, and equanimity.

Satisambojjhaṅgassa …pe… upekkhāsambojjhaṅgassa—

They’re called poor because they haven’t developed and cultivated these seven awakening factors.”

imesaṁ kho, bhikkhu, sattannaṁ bojjhaṅgānaṁ abhāvitattā abahulīkatattā ‘daliddo’ti vuccatī”ti.
