SN 45.36 The Ascetic Life (2nd) – Dutiyasāmaññasutta

At Sāvatthī.

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Bhikkhū, I will teach you the ascetic life and the goal of the ascetic life.

“Sāmaññañca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, sāmaññatthañca.

Listen …

Taṁ suṇātha.

And what is the ascetic life?

Katamañca kho, bhikkhave, sāmaññaṁ?

It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṁ—

right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi.

sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi.

This is called the ascetic life.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, sāmaññaṁ.

And what is the goal of the ascetic life?

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sāmaññattho?

The ending of greed, hate, and delusion.

Yo kho, bhikkhave, rāgakkhayo dosakkhayo mohakkhayo—

This is called the goal of the ascetic life.”

ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, sāmaññattho”ti.
