SN 45.34 Going to the Far Shore – Pāraṅgamasutta
At Sāvatthī.
Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
“Bhikkhū, when these eight things are developed and cultivated they lead to going from the near shore to the far shore.
“Aṭṭhime, bhikkhave, dhammā bhāvitā bahulīkatā apārā pāraṁ gamanāya saṁvattanti.
What eight?
Katame aṭṭha?
They are right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi.
Seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi.
When these eight things are developed and cultivated they lead to going from the near shore to the far shore.”
Ime kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭha dhammā bhāvitā bahulīkatā apārā pāraṁ gamanāya saṁvattantī”ti.
That is what the Buddha said.
Idamavoca bhagavā.
Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
Idaṁ vatvāna sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā:
“Few are those among humans
“Appakā te manussesu,
who cross to the far shore.
ye janā pāragāmino;
The rest just run
Athāyaṁ itarā pajā,
around on the near shore.
tīramevānudhāvati.
When the teaching is well explained,
Ye ca kho sammadakkhāte,
those who practice accordingly
dhamme dhammānuvattino;
are the ones who will cross over
Te janā pāramessanti,
Death’s domain so hard to pass.
maccudheyyaṁ suduttaraṁ.
Rid of dark qualities,
Kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ vippahāya,
an astute person should develop the bright.
sukkaṁ bhāvetha paṇḍito;
Leaving home behind
Okā anokamāgamma,
for the seclusion so hard to enjoy,
viveke yattha dūramaṁ.
you should try to find delight there,
Tatrābhiratimiccheyya,
having left behind sensual pleasures.
hitvā kāme akiñcano;
With no possessions, an astute person
Pariyodapeyya attānaṁ,
should cleanse themselves of mental corruptions.
cittaklesehi paṇḍito.
And those whose minds are rightly developed
Yesaṁ sambodhiyaṅgesu,
in the awakening factors;
sammā cittaṁ subhāvitaṁ;
letting go of attachments,
Ādānapaṭinissagge,
they delight in not grasping.
anupādāya ye ratā;
With defilements ended, brilliant,
Khīṇāsavā jutimanto,
they are extinguished in this world.”
te loke parinibbutā”ti.
