SN 45.30 With Uttiya – Uttiyasutta

At Sāvatthī.

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Then Venerable Uttiya went up to the Buddha … and asked him,

Atha kho āyasmā uttiyo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā uttiyo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

“Just now, sir, as I was in private retreat this thought came to mind.

“idha mayhaṁ, bhante, rahogatassa paṭisallīnassa evaṁ cetaso parivitakko udapādi:

‘The Buddha has spoken of the five kinds of sensual stimulation.

‘pañca kāmaguṇā vuttā bhagavatā.

What are they?’”

Katame nu kho pañca kāmaguṇā vuttā bhagavatā’”ti?

“Good, good, Uttiya!

“Sādhu sādhu, uttiya.

I have spoken of these five kinds of sensual stimulation.

Pañcime kho, uttiya, kāmaguṇā vuttā mayā.

What five?

Katame pañca?

Sights known by the eye that are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

Cakkhuviññeyyā rūpā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā,

Sounds known by the ear …

sotaviññeyyā saddā …pe…

Smells known by the nose …

ghānaviññeyyā gandhā …pe…

Tastes known by the tongue …

jivhāviññeyyā rasā …pe…

Touches known by the body that are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

kāyaviññeyyā phoṭṭhabbā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā—

These are the five kinds of sensual stimulation that I’ve spoken of.

ime kho, uttiya, pañca kāmaguṇā vuttā mayā.

The noble eightfold path should be developed to give up these five kinds of sensual stimulation.

Imesaṁ kho, uttiya, pañcannaṁ kāmaguṇānaṁ pahānāya ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo.

What is the noble eightfold path?

Katamo ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo?

It is right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi.

Seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi.

This is the noble eightfold path that should be developed to give up these five kinds of sensual stimulation.”

Imesaṁ kho, uttiya, pañcannaṁ kāmaguṇānaṁ pahānāya ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo”ti.

Dasamaṁ.

Micchattavaggo tatiyo.
