SN 45.1 Ignorance – Avijjāsutta

So I have heard.

Evaṁ me sutaṁ—

At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhū,

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:

Bhikkhū!”

“bhikkhavo”ti.

“Venerable sir,” they replied.

“Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.

The Buddha said this:

Bhagavā etadavoca:

Bhikkhū, ignorance precedes the attainment of unskillful qualities, with lack of conscience and prudence following along.

“Avijjā, bhikkhave, pubbaṅgamā akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ samāpattiyā, anvadeva ahirikaṁ anottappaṁ.

An ignoramus, sunk in ignorance, gives rise to wrong view.

Avijjāgatassa, bhikkhave, aviddasuno micchādiṭṭhi pahoti;

Wrong view gives rise to wrong thought.

micchādiṭṭhissa micchāsaṅkappo pahoti;

Wrong thought gives rise to wrong speech.

micchāsaṅkappassa micchāvācā pahoti;

Wrong speech gives rise to wrong action.

micchāvācassa micchākammanto pahoti;

Wrong action gives rise to wrong livelihood.

micchākammantassa micchāājīvo pahoti;

Wrong livelihood gives rise to wrong effort.

micchāājīvassa micchāvāyāmo pahoti;

Wrong effort gives rise to wrong mindfulness.

micchāvāyāmassa micchāsati pahoti;

Wrong mindfulness gives rise to wrong samādhi.

micchāsatissa micchāsamādhi pahoti.

Knowledge precedes the attainment of skillful qualities, with conscience and prudence following along.

Vijjā ca kho, bhikkhave, pubbaṅgamā kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ samāpattiyā, anvadeva hirottappaṁ.

A sage, firm in knowledge, gives rise to right view.

Vijjāgatassa, bhikkhave, viddasuno sammādiṭṭhi pahoti;

Right view gives rise to right thought.

sammādiṭṭhissa sammāsaṅkappo pahoti;

Right thought gives rise to right speech.

sammāsaṅkappassa sammāvācā pahoti;

Right speech gives rise to right action.

sammāvācassa sammākammanto pahoti;

Right action gives rise to right livelihood.

sammākammantassa sammāājīvo pahoti;

Right livelihood gives rise to right effort.

sammāājīvassa sammāvāyāmo pahoti;

Right effort gives rise to right mindfulness.

sammāvāyāmassa sammāsati pahoti;

Right mindfulness gives rise to right samādhi.”

sammāsatissa sammāsamādhi pahotī”ti.
