SN 40.10 With Sakka – Sakkasutta
And then Venerable Mahāmoggallāna, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, vanished from Jeta’s Grove and reappeared among the gods of the Thirty-Three.
Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno—seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiñjitaṁ vā bāhaṁ pasāreyya, pasāritaṁ vā bāhaṁ samiñjeyya; evameva—jetavane antarahito devesu tāvatiṁsesu pāturahosi.
Then Sakka, lord of gods, with five hundred deities came up to Mahāmoggallāna, bowed, and stood to one side. Mahāmoggallāna said to him:
Atha kho sakko devānamindo pañcahi devatāsatehi saddhiṁ yenāyasmā mahāmoggallāno tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ mahāmoggallānaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitaṁ kho sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ āyasmā mahāmoggallāno etadavoca:
“Lord of gods, it’s good to go for refuge to the Buddha.
“Sādhu kho, devānaminda, buddhasaraṇagamanaṁ hoti.
It’s the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.
Buddhasaraṇagamanahetu kho, devānaminda, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjanti.
It’s good to go for refuge to the teaching.
Sādhu kho, devānaminda, dhammasaraṇagamanaṁ hoti.
It’s the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.
Dhammasaraṇagamanahetu kho, devānaminda, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjanti.

‘itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti.

It’s good to have experiential confidence in the teaching:
Sādhu kho, devānaminda, dhamme aveccappasādena samannāgamanaṁ hoti:
‘The teaching is well explained by the Buddha—visible in this very life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.’
‘svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo sandiṭṭhiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhī’ti.

Dhamme aveccappasādena samannāgamanahetu kho, devānaminda, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjanti.
It’s good to have experiential confidence in the Saṅgha:
Sādhu kho, devānaminda, saṅghe aveccappasādena samannāgamanaṁ hoti:
‘The Saṅgha of the Buddha’s disciples is practicing the way that’s good, direct, methodical, and proper. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individuals. This is the Saṅgha of the Buddha’s disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.’
‘suppaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho, ujuppaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho, ñāyappaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho, sāmīcippaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho, yadidaṁ cattāri purisayugāni aṭṭha purisapuggalā esa bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiṇeyyo añjalikaraṇīyo anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassā’ti.

Saṅghe aveccappasādena samannāgamanahetu kho, devānaminda, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjanti.
It’s good to have the ethical conduct that’s loved by the noble ones, unbroken, impeccable, spotless, and unmarred, liberating, praised by sensible people, not mistaken, and leading to samādhi.
Sādhu kho, devānaminda, ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgamanaṁ hoti akhaṇḍehi acchiddehi asabalehi akammāsehi bhujissehi viññuppasatthehi aparāmaṭṭhehi samādhisaṁvattanikehi.
It’s the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.”
Ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgamanahetu kho, devānaminda, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjantī”ti.
“My good Moggallāna, it’s good to have experiential confidence in the Buddha …
“Sādhu kho, mārisa moggallāna, buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgamanaṁ hoti:
‘itipi so …pe… satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti.

divine life span, beauty, happiness, glory, sovereignty, sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches.
dibbena āyunā, dibbena vaṇṇena, dibbena sukhena, dibbena yasena, dibbena ādhipateyyena, dibbehi rūpehi, dibbehi saddehi, dibbehi gandhehi, dibbehi rasehi, dibbehi phoṭṭhabbehi.
It’s good to go for refuge to the teaching …

‘itipi so bhagavā …pe… satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti.
It’s the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.
Buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgamanahetu kho, devānaminda, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjanti.
They surpass other gods in ten respects:
Te aññe deve dasahi ṭhānehi adhigaṇhanti—
divine life span, beauty, happiness, glory, sovereignty, sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches.
dibbena āyunā …pe… dibbehi phoṭṭhabbehi.
It’s good to have experiential confidence in the teaching …
Sādhu kho, devānaminda, dhamme aveccappasādena samannāgamanaṁ hoti:
‘svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo …pe… paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhī’ti.
Dhamme aveccappasādena samannāgamanahetu kho, devānaminda, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjanti …pe….
It’s good to have experiential confidence in the Saṅgha …

‘suppaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho …pe… lokassā’ti.

It’s good to have the ethical conduct that’s loved by the noble ones …”

Ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgamanahetu kho, devānaminda, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjanti.
Te aññe deve dasahi ṭhānehi adhigaṇhanti—
dibbena āyunā …pe… dibbehi phoṭṭhabbehī”ti.
“My good Moggallāna, it’s good to have experiential confidence in the Buddha …”

“Sādhu kho, devānaminda, buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgamanaṁ hoti:
‘itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti.
Buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgamanahetu kho, devānaminda, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjanti.

Saṅghe aveccappasādena samannāgamanahetu kho, devānaminda, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjanti.

Sādhu kho, devānaminda, ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgamanaṁ hoti akhaṇḍehi acchiddehi asabalehi akammāsehi bhujissehi viññuppasatthehi aparāmaṭṭhehi samādhisaṁvattanikehi.
Ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgamanahetu kho, devānaminda, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjanti.
Te aññe deve dasahi ṭhānehi adhigaṇhanti—
dibbena āyunā, dibbena vaṇṇena, dibbena sukhena, dibbena yasena, dibbena ādhipateyyena, dibbehi rūpehi, dibbehi saddehi, dibbehi gandhehi, dibbehi rasehi, dibbehi phoṭṭhabbehī”ti.
