SN 36.12 In the Sky (1st) – Paṭhamaākāsasutta

 

Bhikkhū, various winds blow in the sky.

“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ākāse vividhā vātā vāyanti.

Winds blow from the east, the west, the north, and the south. There are winds that are dusty and dustless, cool and warm, weak and strong.

Puratthimāpi vātā vāyanti, pacchimāpi vātā vāyanti, uttarāpi vātā vāyanti, dakkhiṇāpi vātā vāyanti, sarajāpi vātā vāyanti, arajāpi vātā vāyanti, sītāpi vātā vāyanti, uṇhāpi vātā vāyanti, parittāpi vātā vāyanti, adhimattāpi vātā vāyanti.

In the same way, various feelings arise in this body: pleasant, painful, and neutral feelings.

Evameva kho, bhikkhave, imasmiṁ kāyasmiṁ vividhā vedanā uppajjanti, sukhāpi vedanā uppajjati, dukkhāpi vedanā uppajjati, adukkhamasukhāpi vedanā uppajjatīti.

There are many and various

Yathāpi vātā ākāse,

winds that blow in the sky.

vāyanti vividhā puthū;

From the east they come, also the west,

Puratthimā pacchimā cāpi,

the north, and then the south.

uttarā atha dakkhiṇā.

They are dusty and dustless,

Sarajā arajā capi,

cool and sometimes warm,

sītā uṇhā ca ekadā;

strong and weak;

Adhimattā parittā ca,

these are the different breezes that blow.

puthū vāyanti mālutā.

So too, in this body

Tathevimasmiṁ kāyasmiṁ,

feelings arise,

samuppajjanti vedanā;

pleasant and painful,

Sukhadukkhasamuppatti,

and those that are neutral.

adukkhamasukhā ca yā.

But when a bhikkhu is keen,

Yato ca bhikkhu ātāpī,

not neglecting situational awareness,

sampajaññaṁ na riñcati;

that astute person

Tato so vedanā sabbā,

understands all feelings.

parijānāti paṇḍito.

Completely understanding feelings,

So vedanā pariññāya,

they’re without defilements in this very life.

diṭṭhe dhamme anāsavo;

That knowledge master is firm in principle;

Kāyassa bhedā dhammaṭṭho,

when their body breaks up, they can’t be reckoned.”

saṅkhyaṁ nopeti vedagū”ti.
