SN 35.110 Things Prone to Being Grasped – Upādāniyasutta

 

Bhikkhū, I will teach you the things that are prone to being grasped, and the grasping.

“Upādāniye ca, bhikkhave, dhamme desessāmi upādānañca.

Taṁ suṇātha.

What are the things that are prone to being grasped? And what is the grasping?

Katame ca, bhikkhave, upādāniyā dhammā, katamañca upādānaṁ?

The eye is something that’s prone to being grasped.

Cakkhuṁ, bhikkhave, upādāniyo dhammo.

The desire and greed for it is the grasping.

Yo tattha chandarāgo, taṁ tattha upādānaṁ …pe…

The ear … nose … tongue … body …

jivhā upādāniyo dhammo …pe…

mind is something that’s prone to being grasped.

mano upādāniyo dhammo.

The desire and greed for it is the grasping.

Yo tattha chandarāgo, taṁ tattha upādānaṁ.

These are called the things that are prone to being grasped, and this is the grasping.”

Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, upādāniyā dhammā, idaṁ upādānan”ti.
