SN 35.106 The Origin of Suffering – Dukkhasamudayasutta

Bhikkhū, I will teach you the origin and ending of suffering.

“Dukkhassa, bhikkhave, samudayañca atthaṅgamañca desessāmi.

Listen …

Taṁ suṇātha.

And what, bhikkhū, is the origin of suffering?

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, dukkhassa samudayo?

Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact.

Cakkhuñca paṭicca rūpe ca uppajjati cakkhuviññāṇaṁ. Tiṇṇaṁ saṅgati phasso.

Contact is a condition for feeling.

Phassapaccayā vedanā;

Feeling is a condition for craving.

vedanāpaccayā taṇhā.

This is the origin of suffering …

Ayaṁ dukkhassa samudayo …pe…

jivhañca paṭicca rase ca uppajjati jivhāviññāṇaṁ. Tiṇṇaṁ saṅgati phasso.

Phassapaccayā vedanā;

vedanāpaccayā taṇhā.

Mind consciousness arises dependent on the mind and thoughts.

Ayaṁ dukkhassa samudayo …pe… manañca paṭicca dhamme ca uppajjati manoviññāṇaṁ.

The meeting of the three is contact.

Tiṇṇaṁ saṅgati phasso.

Contact is a condition for feeling.

Phassapaccayā vedanā;

Feeling is a condition for craving.

vedanāpaccayā taṇhā.

This is the origin of suffering.

Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhave, dukkhassa samudayo.

And what is the ending of suffering?

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, dukkhassa atthaṅgamo?

Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact.

Cakkhuñca paṭicca rūpe ca uppajjati cakkhuviññāṇaṁ. Tiṇṇaṁ saṅgati phasso.

Contact is a condition for feeling.

Phassapaccayā vedanā;

Feeling is a condition for craving.

vedanāpaccayā taṇhā.

When that craving fades away and ceases with nothing left over, grasping ceases.

Tassāyeva taṇhāya asesavirāganirodhā upādānanirodho;

When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases.

upādānanirodhā bhavanirodho;

When continued existence ceases, rebirth ceases.

bhavanirodhā jātinirodho;

When rebirth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress cease.

jātinirodhā jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā nirujjhanti.

That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.

Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti.

This is the ending of suffering. …

Ayaṁ dukkhassa atthaṅgamo …pe…
