SN 35.76 With Rādha on AniccaRādhaaniccasutta

 

The Venerable Rādha went up to the Buddha …

Atha kho āyasmā rādho …pe…

and said to him,

ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā rādho bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

“Sir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When I’ve heard it, I’ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.”

“sādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saṅkhittena dhammaṁ desetu, yamahaṁ bhagavato dhammaṁ sutvā eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto vihareyyan”ti.

“Rādha, you should give up desire for what is anicca.

“Yaṁ kho, rādha, aniccaṁ tatra te chando pahātabbo.

And what is anicca?

Kiñca, rādha, aniccaṁ tatra te chando pahātabbo?

The eye, sights, eye consciousness,

Cakkhu aniccaṁ, rūpā aniccā, cakkhuviññāṇaṁ …

and eye contact are anicca.

cakkhusamphasso …

And the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact is also anicca. You should give up desire for it.

yampidaṁ cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi aniccaṁ. Tatra te chando pahātabbo …pe…

The ear … nose … tongue …

jivhā …

body …

kāyo …

The mind,

mano anicco. Tatra te chando pahātabbo.

thoughts,

Dhammā …

mind consciousness,

manoviññāṇaṁ …

and mind contact are anicca.

manosamphasso …

And the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact is also anicca. You should give up desire for it.

yampidaṁ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi aniccaṁ. Tatra te chando pahātabbo.

You should give up desire for what is anicca.”

Yaṁ kho, rādha, aniccaṁ tatra te chando pahātabbo”ti.
