SN 33.4 Not Knowing Saṅkhāra – Saṅkhāraaññāṇasutta

 

At Sāvatthī.

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Then the wanderer Vacchagotta said to the Buddha:

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho vacchagotto paribbājako bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

“What is the cause, Master Gotama, what is the reason why these various misconceptions arise in the world? …”

“ko nu kho, bho gotama, hetu, ko paccayo, yānimāni anekavihitāni diṭṭhigatāni loke uppajjanti—

 

sassato lokoti vā, asassato lokoti vā …pe…

 

neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇāti vā”ti?

“Vaccha, it is because of not knowing saṅkhāra, their origin, their cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation …”

“Saṅkhāresu kho, vaccha, aññāṇā, saṅkhārasamudaye aññāṇā, saṅkhāranirodhe aññāṇā, saṅkhāranirodhagāminiyā paṭipadāya aññāṇā;

 

evamimāni anekavihitāni diṭṭhigatāni loke uppajjanti—

 

sassato lokoti vā, asassato lokoti vā …pe…

 

neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇāti vāti.

 

Ayaṁ kho, vaccha, hetu, ayaṁ paccayo, yānimāni anekavihitāni diṭṭhigatāni loke uppajjanti—

 

sassato lokoti vā, asassato lokoti vā …pe…

 

neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇāti vā”ti.
