At Sāvatthī.

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Bhikkhū, I will teach you the things that are prone to being fettered, and the fetter.

“Saṁyojaniye ca, bhikkhave, dhamme desessāmi saṁyojanañca.

Taṁ suṇātha.

What are the things that are prone to being fettered? And what is the fetter?

Katame ca, bhikkhave, saṁyojaniyā dhammā, katamaṁ saṁyojanaṁ?

Form is something that’s prone to being fettered.

Rūpaṁ, bhikkhave, saṁyojaniyo dhammo;

The desire and greed for it is the fetter.

yo tattha chandarāgo, taṁ tattha saṁyojanaṁ.

Consciousness is something that’s prone to being fettered.

viññāṇaṁ saṁyojaniyo dhammo;

The desire and greed for it is the fetter.

yo tattha chandarāgo, taṁ tattha saṁyojanaṁ.

These are called the things that are prone to being fettered, and this is the fetter.”

Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, saṁyojaniyā dhammā, idaṁ saṁyojanan”ti.
