SN 22.76 The Perfected Ones – Arahantasutta

 

At Sāvatthī.

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Bhikkhū, form is anicca.

“Rūpaṁ, bhikkhave, aniccaṁ.

What’s anicca is suffering.

Yadaniccaṁ taṁ dukkhaṁ;

What’s suffering is not-self.

yaṁ dukkhaṁ tadanattā;

And what’s not-self should be truly seen with right understanding like this: ‘This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.’

yadanattā taṁ ‘netaṁ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attā’ti evametaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya daṭṭhabbaṁ.

Saṅkhāra

saṅkhārā …

Consciousness is anicca.

viññāṇaṁ aniccaṁ.

What’s anicca is suffering.

Yadaniccaṁ taṁ dukkhaṁ;

What’s suffering is not-self.

yaṁ dukkhaṁ tadanattā;

And what’s not-self should be truly seen with right understanding like this: ‘This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.’

yadanattā taṁ ‘netaṁ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attā’ti evametaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya daṭṭhabbaṁ.

Seeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with form, feeling, perception, saṅkhāra, and consciousness.

Evaṁ passaṁ, bhikkhave, sutavā ariyasāvako rūpasmimpi nibbindati, vedanāyapi … saññāyapi … saṅkhāresupi … viññāṇasmimpi nibbindati.

Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed. When they’re freed, they know they’re freed.

Nibbindaṁ virajjati; virāgā vimuccati. Vimuttasmiṁ vimuttamiti ñāṇaṁ hoti.

They understand: ‘Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is no return to any state of existence.’

‘Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānāti.

As far as there are abodes of sentient beings, even up until the pinnacle of existence, the perfected ones are the foremost and the best.”

Yāvatā, bhikkhave, sattāvāsā, yāvatā bhavaggaṁ, ete aggā, ete seṭṭhā lokasmiṁ yadidaṁ arahanto”ti.

That is what the Buddha said.

Idamavoca bhagavā.

Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:

Idaṁ vatvāna sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā:

“Oh! How happy are the perfected ones!

“Sukhino vata arahanto,

Craving is not found in them,

taṇhā tesaṁ na vijjati;

the conceit ‘I am’ is cut off,

Asmimāno samucchinno,

and the net of delusion is shattered.

mohajālaṁ padālitaṁ.

They’ve attained imperturbability,

Anejaṁ te anuppattā,

their minds are unclouded,

cittaṁ tesaṁ anāvilaṁ;

nothing in the world clings to them,

Loke anupalittā te,

they’ve become holy, undefiled.

brahmabhūtā anāsavā.

Completely understanding the five aggregates,

Pañcakkhandhe pariññāya,

their domain is the seven good qualities.

satta saddhammagocarā;

Those good people are praiseworthy,

Pasaṁsiyā sappurisā,

the Buddha’s rightful children.

puttā buddhassa orasā.

Endowed with the seven gems,

Sattaratanasampannā,

and trained in the three trainings,

Tīsu sikkhāsu sikkhitā;

the great heroes live on,

Anuvicaranti mahāvīrā,

with fear and dread given up.

Pahīnabhayabheravā.

Endowed with ten factors,

Dasahaṅgehi sampannā,

those giants have samādhi.

mahānāgā samāhitā;

These are the best in the world,

Ete kho seṭṭhā lokasmiṁ,

craving is not found in them.

taṇhā tesaṁ na vijjati.

The master’s knowledge has arisen:

Asekhañāṇamuppannaṁ,

‘This bag of bones is my last.’

antimoyaṁ samussayo;

They are independent of others

Yo sāro brahmacariyassa,

in the core of the spiritual path.

tasmiṁ aparapaccayā.

Unwavering in the face of discrimination,

Vidhāsu na vikampanti,

they’re freed from future lives.

vippamuttā punabbhavā;

They’ve reached the level of the tamed,

Dantabhūmimanuppattā,

in the world, they’re the winners.

te loke vijitāvino.

Above, below, all round,

Uddhaṁ tiriyaṁ apācīnaṁ,

relishing is not found in them.

nandī tesaṁ na vijjati;

They roar their lion’s roar:

Nadanti te sīhanādaṁ,

‘The awakened are supreme in the world!’”

buddhā loke anuttarā”ti.
