SN 22.20 Not-Self With Its Cause – Sahetuanattasutta

At Sāvatthī.

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Bhikkhū, form is not-self.

“Rūpaṁ, bhikkhave, anattā.

The cause and condition that gives rise to form is also not-self.

Yopi hetu yopi paccayo rūpassa uppādāya, sopi anattā.

Since form is produced by what is not-self, how could it be self?

Anattasambhūtaṁ, bhikkhave, rūpaṁ kuto attā bhavissati.

Feeling is not-self …

Vedanā anattā …

Perception is not-self …

saññā anattā …

Saṅkhāra are not-self …

saṅkhārā anattā …

Consciousness is not-self.

viññāṇaṁ anattā.

The cause and condition that gives rise to consciousness is also not-self.

Yopi hetu yopi paccayo viññāṇassa uppādāya, sopi anattā.

Since consciousness is produced by what is not-self, how could it be self?

Anattasambhūtaṁ, bhikkhave, viññāṇaṁ kuto attā bhavissati.

Seeing this …

Evaṁ passaṁ …pe…

They understand: ‘… there is no return to any state of existence.’”

nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānātī”ti.
