At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. …

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme …

Bhikkhū, there are these four elements.

“catasso imā, bhikkhave, dhātuyo.

What four?

Katamā catasso?

The elements of earth, water, fire, and air.

Pathavīdhātu, āpodhātu, tejodhātu, vāyodhātu—

These are the four elements.”

imā kho, bhikkhave, catasso dhātuyo”ti.
