SN 14.15 Walking Together – Caṅkamasutta

 

At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vulture’s Peak Mountain.

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati gijjhakūṭe pabbate.

Now at that time Venerable Sāriputta was walking together with several bhikkhū not far from the Buddha.

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā sāriputto sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ bhagavato avidūre caṅkamati;

Venerable Mahāmoggallāna was doing likewise, as were

āyasmāpi kho mahāmoggallāno sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ bhagavato avidūre caṅkamati;

Venerable Mahākassapa,

āyasmāpi kho mahākassapo sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ bhagavato avidūre caṅkamati;

Venerable Anuruddha,

āyasmāpi kho anuruddho sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ bhagavato avidūre caṅkamati;

Venerable Puṇṇa son of Mantāṇī,

āyasmāpi kho puṇṇo mantāniputto sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ bhagavato avidūre caṅkamati;

Venerable Upāli,

āyasmāpi kho upāli sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ bhagavato avidūre caṅkamati;

Venerable Ānanda,

āyasmāpi kho ānando sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ bhagavato avidūre caṅkamati;

and Devadatta.

devadattopi kho sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ bhagavato avidūre caṅkamati.

Then the Buddha said to the bhikkhū,

Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:

Bhikkhū, do you see Sāriputta walking together with several bhikkhū?”

“passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, sāriputtaṁ sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ caṅkamantan”ti?

“Yes, sir.”

“Evaṁ, bhante”.

“All of those bhikkhū have great wisdom.

“Sabbe kho ete, bhikkhave, bhikkhū mahāpaññā.

Do you see Moggallāna walking together with several bhikkhū?”

Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, moggallānaṁ sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ caṅkamantan”ti?

“Yes, sir.”

“Evaṁ, bhante”.

“All of those bhikkhū have great psychic power.

“Sabbe kho ete, bhikkhave, bhikkhū mahiddhikā.

Do you see Kassapa walking together with several bhikkhū?”

Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, kassapaṁ sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ caṅkamantan”ti?

“Yes, sir.”

“Evaṁ, bhante”.

“All of those bhikkhū advocate austerities.

“Sabbe kho ete, bhikkhave, bhikkhū dhutavādā.

Do you see Anuruddha walking together with several bhikkhū?”

Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, anuruddhaṁ sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ caṅkamantan”ti?

“Yes, sir.”

“Evaṁ, bhante”.

“All of those bhikkhū have clairvoyance.

“Sabbe kho ete, bhikkhave, bhikkhū dibbacakkhukā.

Do you see Puṇṇa son of Mantāṇī walking together with several bhikkhū?”

Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, puṇṇaṁ mantāniputtaṁ sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ caṅkamantan”ti?

“Yes, sir.”

“Evaṁ, bhante”.

“All of those bhikkhū are Dhamma speakers.

“Sabbe kho ete, bhikkhave, bhikkhū dhammakathikā.

Do you see Upāli walking together with several bhikkhū?”

Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, upāliṁ sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ caṅkamantan”ti?

“Yes, sir.”

“Evaṁ, bhante”.

“All of those bhikkhū are experts in monastic law.

“Sabbe kho ete, bhikkhave, bhikkhū vinayadharā.

Do you see Ānanda walking together with several bhikkhū?”

Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, ānandaṁ sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ caṅkamantan”ti?

“Yes, sir.”

“Evaṁ, bhante”.

“All of those bhikkhū are very learned.

“Sabbe kho ete, bhikkhave, bhikkhū bahussutā.

Do you see Devadatta walking together with several bhikkhū?”

Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, devadattaṁ sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ caṅkamantan”ti?

“Yes, sir.”

“Evaṁ, bhante”.

“All of those bhikkhū have bad desires.

“Sabbe kho ete, bhikkhave, bhikkhū pāpicchā.

Sentient beings come together and converge because of an element.

Dhātusova, bhikkhave, sattā saṁsandanti samenti.

Those who have bad convictions come together and converge with those who have bad convictions.

Hīnādhimuttikā hīnādhimuttikehi saddhiṁ saṁsandanti samenti;

Those who have good convictions come together and converge with those who have good convictions.

kalyāṇādhimuttikā kalyāṇādhimuttikehi saddhiṁ saṁsandanti samenti.

In the past,

Atītampi kho, bhikkhave, addhānaṁ dhātusova sattā saṁsandiṁsu samiṁsu.

Hīnādhimuttikā hīnādhimuttikehi saddhiṁ saṁsandiṁsu samiṁsu;

kalyāṇādhimuttikā kalyāṇādhimuttikehi saddhiṁ saṁsandiṁsu samiṁsu.

in the future,

Anāgatampi kho, bhikkhave, addhānaṁ dhātusova sattā saṁsandissanti samessanti.

Hīnādhimuttikā hīnādhimuttikehi saddhiṁ saṁsandissanti samessanti;

kalyāṇādhimuttikā kalyāṇādhimuttikehi saddhiṁ saṁsandissanti samessanti.

and also in the present, sentient beings come together and converge because of an element.

Etarahipi kho, bhikkhave, paccuppannaṁ addhānaṁ dhātusova sattā saṁsandanti samenti.

Those who have bad convictions come together and converge with those who have bad convictions.

Hīnādhimuttikā hīnādhimuttikehi saddhiṁ saṁsandanti samenti;

Those who have good convictions come together and converge with those who have good convictions.”

kalyāṇādhimuttikā kalyāṇādhimuttikehi saddhiṁ saṁsandanti samentī”ti.
