SN 11.21 Incinerated – Chetvāsutta

Near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove.

Sāvatthiyaṁ jetavane.

And then Sakka, lord of gods, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side,

Atha kho sakko devānamindo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.

and addressed him in verse:

Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho sakko devānamindo bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

“When what is incinerated do you sleep at ease?

“Kiṁsu chetvā sukhaṁ seti,

When what is incinerated is there no sorrow?

kiṁsu chetvā na socati;

What is the one thing

Kissassu ekadhammassa,

whose killing you approve?”

vadhaṁ rocesi gotamā”ti.

“When anger’s incinerated you sleep at ease.

“Kodhaṁ chetvā sukhaṁ seti,

When anger’s incinerated there is no sorrow.

kodhaṁ chetvā na socati;

O Vāsava, anger has a poisonous root

Kodhassa visamūlassa,

and a honey tip.

madhuraggassa vāsava;

The noble ones praise its killing,

Vadhaṁ ariyā pasaṁsanti,

for when it’s incinerated there is no sorrow.”

tañhi chetvā na socatī”ti.
