SN 10.2 With a Spirit Named Sakka – Sakkanāmasutta

At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vulture’s Peak Mountain.

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati gijjhakūṭe pabbate.

Then a spirit named Sakka went up to the Buddha, and addressed him in verse:

Atha kho sakkanāmako yakkho yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

“You’ve given up all ties,

“Sabbaganthappahīnassa,

and are fully freed.

vippamuttassa te sato;

It’s not a good idea for you, ascetic,

Samaṇassa na taṁ sādhu,

to be instructing others.”

yadaññamanusāsasī”ti.

“No matter what the apparent reason

“Yena kenaci vaṇṇena,

why people are together, Sakka,

saṁvāso sakka jāyati;

it’s unworthy for a wise person

Na taṁ arahati sappañño,

to not think of the other with compassion.

manasā anukampituṁ.

If you instruct others

Manasā ce pasannena,

with a mind clear and confident,

yadaññamanusāsati;

your compassion and empathy

Na tena hoti saṁyutto,

don’t create attachments.”

yānukampā anuddayā”ti.
