SN 9.12 Midday – Majjhanhikasutta

At one time one of the bhikkhū was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove.

Ekaṁ samayaṁ aññataro bhikkhu kosalesu viharati aññatarasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe.

The deity haunting that forest approached that bhikkhu and recited this verse in their presence:

Atha kho tasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe adhivatthā devatā yena so bhikkhu tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā tassa bhikkhuno santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

“In the still of high noon,

“Ṭhite majjhanhike kāle,

when the birds have settled down,

sannisīvesu pakkhisu;

the formidable jungle whispers to itself:

Saṇateva brahāraññaṁ,

that seems so scary to me!”

taṁ bhayaṁ paṭibhāti maṁ.

“In the still of high noon,

Ṭhite majjhanhike kāle,

when the birds have settled down,

sannisīvesu pakkhisu;

the formidable jungle whispers to itself:

Saṇateva brahāraññaṁ,

that seems so delightful to me!”

sā rati paṭibhāti man”ti.
