SN 5.6 With Cālā – Cālāsutta

At Sāvatthī.

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Then the nun Cālā robed up in the morning …

Atha kho cālā bhikkhunī pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā …pe…

and sat at the root of a tree for the day’s meditation.

aññatarasmiṁ rukkhamūle divāvihāraṁ nisīdi.

Then Māra the Wicked went up to Cālā and said to her,

Atha kho māro pāpimā yena cālā bhikkhunī tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā cālaṁ bhikkhuniṁ etadavoca:

“Nun, what don’t you approve of?”

“kiṁ nu tvaṁ, bhikkhuni, na rocesī”ti?

“I don’t approve of rebirth, sir.”

“Jātiṁ khvāhaṁ, āvuso, na rocemī”ti.

“Why don’t you approve of rebirth?

“Kiṁ nu jātiṁ na rocesi,

When you’re born, you get to enjoy sensual pleasures.

jāto kāmāni bhuñjati;

Who put this idea in your head:

Ko nu taṁ idamādapayi,

‘Nun, don’t approve of rebirth’?”

jātiṁ mā roca bhikkhunī”ti.

“Death comes to those who are born,

“Jātassa maraṇaṁ hoti,

when you’re born you undergo sufferings—

jāto dukkhāni phussati;

killing, caging, misery—

Bandhaṁ vadhaṁ pariklesaṁ,

that’s why you shouldn’t approve of rebirth.

tasmā jātiṁ na rocaye.

The Buddha taught me the Dhamma

Buddho dhammamadesesi,

for passing beyond rebirth,

jātiyā samatikkamaṁ;

for giving up all suffering;

Sabbadukkhappahānāya,

he settled me in the truth.

so maṁ sacce nivesayi.

There are beings in the realm of luminous form,

Ye ca rūpūpagā sattā,

and others established in the formless.

ye ca arūpaṭṭhāyino;

Not understanding cessation,

Nirodhaṁ appajānantā,

they return in future lives.”

āgantāro punabbhavan”ti.

Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, “The nun Cālā knows me!” miserable and sad, vanished right there.

Atha kho māro pāpimā “jānāti maṁ cālā bhikkhunī”ti dukkhī dummano tatthevantaradhāyīti.
