SN 2.27 With Nanda – Nandasutta

Standing to one side, the god Nanda recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho nando devaputto bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

“Time flies, nights pass by,

“Accenti kālā tarayanti rattiyo,

the stages of life leave us one by one.

Vayoguṇā anupubbaṁ jahanti;

Seeing this peril in death,

Etaṁ bhayaṁ maraṇe pekkhamāno,

you should do good deeds that bring happiness.”

Puññāni kayirātha sukhāvahānī”ti.

“Time flies, nights pass by,

“Accenti kālā tarayanti rattiyo,

the stages of life leave us one by one.

Vayoguṇā anupubbaṁ jahanti;

Seeing this peril in death,

Etaṁ bhayaṁ maraṇe pekkhamāno,

one looking for peace would drop the world’s bait.”

Lokāmisaṁ pajahe santipekkho”ti.
