At Sāvatthī.

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Then, late at night, the glorious god Candimasa, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side,

Atha kho candimaso devaputto abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇo kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.

and recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho candimaso devaputto bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

“Like deer in a mosquito-free marsh,

“Te hi sotthiṁ gamissanti,

they will reach a safe place

kacchevāmakase magā;

having entered the absorptions,

Jhānāni upasampajja,

unified, alert, and mindful.”

ekodi nipakā satā”ti.

“Like fish when the net is cut,

“Te hi pāraṁ gamissanti,

they will reach the far shore

chetvā jālaṁva ambujo;

having entered the absorptions,

Jhānāni upasampajja,

diligent, with vices discarded.”

appamattā raṇañjahā”ti.
