SN 1.80 Lamp – Pajjotasutta

“What’s the lamp for the world?

“Kiṁsu lokasmi pajjoto,

What in the world is wakeful?

kiṁsu lokasmi jāgaro;

Who are one’s work colleagues?

Kiṁsu kamme sajīvānaṁ,

What is one’s walk of life?

kimassa iriyāpatho.

What nurtures the idle and the tireless,

Kiṁsu alasaṁ analasañca,

like a mother her child?

Mātā puttaṁva posati;

By what do the creatures who live off the earth

Kiṁ bhūtā upajīvanti,

sustain their life?”

Ye pāṇā pathavissitā”ti.

“Wisdom is the lamp for the world.

“Paññā lokasmi pajjoto,

Mindfulness in the world is wakeful.

sati lokasmi jāgaro;

Cattle are one’s work colleagues,

Gāvo kamme sajīvānaṁ,

and the furrow is one’s walk of life.

sītassa iriyāpatho.

Rain nurtures the idle and the tireless,

Vuṭṭhi alasaṁ analasañca,

like a mother her child.

Mātā puttaṁva posati;

The creatures who live on the earth

Vuṭṭhiṁ bhūtā upajīvanti,

sustain their life by rain.”

Ye pāṇā pathavissitā”ti.
