“Don’t you have a little hut?

“Kacci te kuṭikā natthi,

Don’t you have a little nest?

kacci natthi kulāvakā;

Don’t you have any networks?

Kacci santānakā natthi,

Aren’t you free of shackles?”

kacci muttosi bandhanā”ti.

“Indeed I have no little hut.

“Taggha me kuṭikā natthi,

Indeed I have no little nest.

taggha natthi kulāvakā;

Indeed I have no networks.

Taggha santānakā natthi,

Indeed I’m free from shackles.”

taggha muttomhi bandhanā”ti.

“What do you think I call a little hut?

“Kintāhaṁ kuṭikaṁ brūmi,

What do I call a little nest?

kiṁ te brūmi kulāvakaṁ;

What do you think I call a network?

Kiṁ te santānakaṁ brūmi,

And what do I call a shackle?”

kintāhaṁ brūmi bandhanan”ti.

“You call a mother a little hut;

“Mātaraṁ kuṭikaṁ brūsi,

and a wife a little nest.

bhariyaṁ brūsi kulāvakaṁ;

You call children a network,

Putte santānake brūsi,

and you tell me craving’s a shackle.”

taṇhaṁ me brūsi bandhanan”ti.

“It’s good you have no little hut!

“Sāhu te kuṭikā natthi,

It’s good you have no little nest!

sāhu natthi kulāvakā;

It’s good you have no networks!

Sāhu santānakā natthi,

And good that you’re free from shackles.”

sāhu muttosi bandhanā”ti.
