SN 1.18 Conscience – Hirīsutta

“Can a person constrained by conscience

“Hirīnisedho puriso,

be found in the world?

koci lokasmiṁ vijjati;

Who shies away from blame,

Yo nindaṁ apabodhati,

like a fine horse from the whip?”

asso bhadro kasāmivā”ti.

“Few are those constrained by conscience,

“Hirīnisedhā tanuyā,

who live always mindful.

ye caranti sadā satā;

Having reached the end of suffering,

Antaṁ dukkhassa pappuyya,

they live smoothly in the rough.”

caranti visame saman”ti.
