SN 1.17 Hard to Do – Dukkarasutta

“Hard to do, hard to endure,

“Dukkaraṁ duttitikkhañca,

is the ascetic life for the inept,

abyattena ca sāmaññaṁ;

for it has many narrow passes

Bahūhi tattha sambādhā,

where the fool founders.”

yattha bālo visīdatī”ti.

“How many days could an ascetic live

“Katihaṁ careyya sāmaññaṁ,

without controlling the mind?

cittañce na nivāraye;

They’d founder with each step,

Pade pade visīdeyya,

under the sway of thoughts.

saṅkappānaṁ vasānugoti.

A bhikkhu should collect their thoughts

Kummova aṅgāni sake kapāle,

as a tortoise draws its limbs into its shell.

Samodahaṁ bhikkhu manovitakke;

Independent, not disturbing others,

Anissito aññamaheṭhayāno,

quenched: they wouldn’t blame anyone.”

Parinibbuto nūpavadeyya kañcī”ti.
