At Sāvatthī.

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Standing to one side, that deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

“There’s no love like that for a child,

“Natthi puttasamaṁ pemaṁ,

no wealth equal to cattle,

natthi gosamitaṁ dhanaṁ;

no light like that of the sun,

Natthi sūriyasamā ābhā,

and of waters the ocean is paramount.”

samuddaparamā sarā”ti.

“There’s no love like that for oneself,

“Natthi attasamaṁ pemaṁ,

no wealth equal to grain,

natthi dhaññasamaṁ dhanaṁ;

no light like that of wisdom,

Natthi paññāsamā ābhā,

and of waters the rain is paramount.”

vuṭṭhi ve paramā sarā”ti.
