1.1

So I have heard.

Evaṁ me sutaṁ—

At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhū,

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:

Bhikkhū!”

“bhikkhavo”ti.

1.5

“Venerable sir,” they replied.

“Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.

1.6

The Buddha said this:

Bhagavā etadavoca:

“I shall teach you rebirth by choice.

“saṅkhārupapattiṁ vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi,

Listen and pay close attention, I will speak.”

taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.

“Yes, sir,” they replied.

“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.

The Buddha said this:

Bhagavā etadavoca:

?Take a bhikkhu who has faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom.

“Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddhāya samannāgato hoti, sīlena samannāgato hoti, sutena samannāgato hoti, cāgena samannāgato hoti, paññāya samannāgato hoti.

They think:

Tassa evaṁ hoti:

3.3

‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of well-to-do aristocrats!’

‘aho vatāhaṁ kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā khattiyamahāsālānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjeyyan’ti.

3.4

They settle on that thought, stabilize it and develop it.

So taṁ cittaṁ dahati, taṁ cittaṁ adhiṭṭhāti, taṁ cittaṁ bhāveti.

3.5

Those actions done with defilement and meditations of theirs, developed and cultivated like this, lead to rebirth there.

Tassa te saṅkhārā ca vihārā ca evaṁ bhāvitā evaṁ bahulīkatā tatrupapattiyā saṁvattanti.

3.6

This is the path and the practice that leads to rebirth there.

Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, maggo ayaṁ paṭipadā tatrupapattiyā saṁvattati.

4-5.1

Furthermore, take a bhikkhu who has faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddhāya samannāgato hoti, sīlena samannāgato hoti, sutena samannāgato hoti, cāgena samannāgato hoti, paññāya samannāgato hoti.

4-5.2

They think:

Tassa evaṁ hoti:

4-5.3

‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of well-to-do brahmins …

‘aho vatāhaṁ kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā brāhmaṇamahāsālānaṁ …pe…

4-5.4

well-to-do householders.’

gahapatimahāsālānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjeyyan’ti.

4-5.5

They settle on that thought, stabilize it and develop it.

So taṁ cittaṁ dahati, taṁ cittaṁ adhiṭṭhāti, taṁ cittaṁ bhāveti.

4-5.6

Those actions done with defilement and meditations of theirs, developed and cultivated like this, lead to rebirth there.

Tassa te saṅkhārā ca vihārā ca evaṁ bhāvitā evaṁ bahulīkatā tatrupapattiyā saṁvattanti.

4-5.7

This is the path and the practice that leads to rebirth there.

Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, maggo ayaṁ paṭipadā tatrupapattiyā saṁvattati.

6.1

Furthermore, take a bhikkhu who has faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddhāya samannāgato hoti, sīlena samannāgato hoti, sutena samannāgato hoti, cāgena samannāgato hoti, paññāya samannāgato hoti.

And they’ve heard:

Tassa sutaṁ hoti:

‘The Gods of the Four Great Kings are long-lived, beautiful, and very happy.’

‘cātumahārājikā devā dīghāyukā vaṇṇavanto sukhabahulā’ti.

6.4

They think:

Tassa evaṁ hoti:

‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the Gods of the Four Great Kings!’

‘aho vatāhaṁ kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā cātumahārājikānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjeyyan’ti.

6.6

They settle on that thought, stabilize it and develop it.

So taṁ cittaṁ dahati, taṁ cittaṁ adhiṭṭhāti, taṁ cittaṁ bhāveti.

6.7

Those actions done with defilement and meditations of theirs, developed and cultivated like this, lead to rebirth there.

Tassa te saṅkhārā ca vihārā ca evaṁ bhāvitā evaṁ bahulīkatā tatrupapattiyā saṁvattanti.

6.8

This is the path and the practice that leads to rebirth there.

Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, maggo ayaṁ paṭipadā tatrupapattiyā saṁvattati.

7-11.1

Furthermore, take a bhikkhu who has faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddhāya samannāgato hoti, sīlena samannāgato hoti, sutena samannāgato hoti, cāgena samannāgato hoti, paññāya samannāgato hoti.

the Gods Who Control the Creations of Others are long-lived, beautiful, and very happy.’

paranimmitavasavattī devā dīghāyukā vaṇṇavanto sukhabahulāti.

7-11.8

They think:

Tassa evaṁ hoti:

7-11.9

‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the Gods Who Control the Creations of Others!’

‘aho vatāhaṁ kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā paranimmitavasavattīnaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjeyyan’ti.

7-11.10

They settle on that thought, stabilize it and develop it.

So taṁ cittaṁ dahati, taṁ cittaṁ adhiṭṭhāti, taṁ cittaṁ bhāveti.

7-11.11

Those actions done with defilement and meditations of theirs, developed and cultivated like this, lead to rebirth there.

Tassa te saṅkhārā ca vihārā ca evaṁ bhāvitā evaṁ bahulīkatā tatrupapattiyā saṁvattanti.

7-11.12

This is the path and the practice that leads to rebirth there.

And they’ve heard:

‘The Brahmā of a thousand is long-lived, beautiful, and very happy.’

‘sahasso brahmā dīghāyuko vaṇṇavā sukhabahulo’ti.

12.4

Now the Brahmā of a thousand meditates determined on pervading a galaxy of a thousand solar systems,

Sahasso, bhikkhave, brahmā sahassilokadhātuṁ pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati.

12.5

as well as the sentient beings reborn there.

Yepi tattha sattā upapannā tepi pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati.

12.6

As a person might pick up a gallnut in their hand and examine it,

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, cakkhumā puriso ekaṁ āmaṇḍaṁ hatthe karitvā paccavekkheyya;

12.7

so too the Brahmā of a thousand meditates determined on pervading a galaxy of a thousand solar systems,

evameva kho, bhikkhave, sahasso brahmā sahassilokadhātuṁ pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati.

12.8

as well as the sentient beings reborn there.

Yepi tattha sattā upapannā tepi pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati.

12.9

They think:

Tassa evaṁ hoti:

12.10

‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the Brahmā of a thousand!’

‘aho vatāhaṁ kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sahassassa brahmuno sahabyataṁ upapajjeyyan’ti.

12.11

They settle on that thought, stabilize it and develop it.

So taṁ cittaṁ dahati, taṁ cittaṁ adhiṭṭhāti, taṁ cittaṁ bhāveti.

12.12

Those actions done with defilement and meditations of theirs, developed and cultivated like this, lead to rebirth there.

Tassa te saṅkhārā ca vihārā ca evaṁ bhāvitā evaṁ bahulīkatā tatrupapattiyā saṁvattanti.

12.13

This is the path and the practice that leads to rebirth there.

Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, maggo ayaṁ paṭipadā tatrupapattiyā saṁvattati.

13-16.1

Furthermore, take a bhikkhu who has faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom.

the Brahmā of five thousand is long-lived, beautiful, and very happy.’

pañcasahasso brahmā dīghāyuko vaṇṇavā sukhabahuloti.

13-16.9

Now the Brahmā of five thousand meditates determined on pervading a galaxy of five thousand solar systems,

Pañcasahasso, bhikkhave, brahmā pañcasahassilokadhātuṁ pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati.

13-16.10

as well as the sentient beings reborn there.

Yepi tattha sattā upapannā tepi pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati.

13-16.11

As a person might pick up five gallnuts in their hand and examine them,

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, cakkhumā puriso pañca āmaṇḍāni hatthe karitvā paccavekkheyya;

13-16.12

so too the Brahmā of five thousand meditates determined on pervading a galaxy of five thousand solar systems,

evameva kho, bhikkhave, pañcasahasso brahmā pañcasahassilokadhātuṁ pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati.

13-16.13

as well as the sentient beings reborn there.

Yepi tattha sattā upapannā tepi pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati.

13-16.14

They think:

Tassa evaṁ hoti:

13-16.15

‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the Brahmā of five thousand!’

‘aho vatāhaṁ kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā pañcasahassassa brahmuno sahabyataṁ upapajjeyyan’ti.

13-16.16

They settle on that thought, stabilize it and develop it.

So taṁ cittaṁ dahati, taṁ cittaṁ adhiṭṭhāti, taṁ cittaṁ bhāveti.

13-16.17

Those actions done with defilement and meditations of theirs, developed and cultivated like this, lead to rebirth there.

Tassa te saṅkhārā ca vihārā ca evaṁ bhāvitā evaṁ bahulīkatā tatrupapattiyā saṁvattanti.

13-16.18

This is the path and the practice that leads to rebirth there.

Furthermore, take a bhikkhu who has faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom.

‘dasasahasso brahmā dīghāyuko vaṇṇavā sukhabahulo’ti.

17.6

Now the Brahmā of ten thousand meditates determined on pervading a galaxy of ten thousand solar systems,

Dasasahasso, bhikkhave, brahmā dasasahassilokadhātuṁ pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati.

17.7

as well as the sentient beings reborn there.

Yepi tattha sattā upapannā tepi pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati.

17.8

Suppose there was a beryl gem that was naturally beautiful, eight-faceted, well-worked. When placed on a cream rug it would shine and glow and radiate.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, maṇi veḷuriyo subho jātimā aṭṭhaṁso suparikammakato paṇḍukambale nikkhitto bhāsate ca tapate ca virocati ca;

17.9

In the same way the Brahmā of ten thousand meditates determined on pervading a galaxy of ten thousand solar systems,

evameva kho, bhikkhave, dasasahasso brahmā dasasahassilokadhātuṁ pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati.

17.10

as well as the sentient beings reborn there.

Yepi tattha sattā upapannā tepi pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati.

17.11

They think:

Tassa evaṁ hoti:

17.12

‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the Brahmā of ten thousand!’

‘aho vatāhaṁ kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā dasasahassassa brahmuno sahabyataṁ upapajjeyyan’ti.

17.13

They settle on that thought, stabilize it and develop it.

So taṁ cittaṁ dahati, taṁ cittaṁ adhiṭṭhāti, taṁ cittaṁ bhāveti.

17.14

Those actions done with defilement and meditations of theirs, developed and cultivated like this, lead to rebirth there.

Now the Brahmā of a hundred thousand meditates determined on pervading a galaxy of a hundred thousand solar systems,

Satasahasso, bhikkhave, brahmā satasahassilokadhātuṁ pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati.

18.8

as well as the sentient beings reborn there.

Yepi tattha sattā upapannā tepi pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati.

18.9

Suppose there was a pendant of river gold, fashioned by an expert smith, well wrought in the forge. When placed on a cream rug it would shine and glow and radiate.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, nikkhaṁ jambonadaṁ dakkhakammāraputtaukkāmukhasukusalasampahaṭṭhaṁ paṇḍukambale nikkhittaṁ bhāsate ca tapate ca virocati ca;

18.10

In the same way the Brahmā of a hundred thousand meditates determined on pervading a galaxy of a hundred thousand solar systems,

evameva kho, bhikkhave, satasahasso brahmā satasahassilokadhātuṁ pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati.

18.11

as well as the sentient beings reborn there.

Yepi tattha sattā upapannā tepi pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati.

18.12

They think:

Tassa evaṁ hoti:

18.13

‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the Brahmā of a hundred thousand!’

‘aho vatāhaṁ kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā satasahassassa brahmuno sahabyataṁ upapajjeyyan’ti.

18.14

They settle on that thought, stabilize it and develop it.

So taṁ cittaṁ dahati, taṁ cittaṁ adhiṭṭhāti, taṁ cittaṁ bhāveti.

18.15

Those actions done with defilement and meditations of theirs, developed and cultivated like this, lead to rebirth there.

‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the gods of the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception!’

‘aho vatāhaṁ kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā nevasaññānāsaññāyatanūpagānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjeyyan’ti.

33-36.10

They settle on that thought, stabilize it and develop it.

So taṁ cittaṁ dahati, taṁ cittaṁ adhiṭṭhāti, taṁ cittaṁ bhāveti.

33-36.11

Those actions done with defilement and meditations of theirs, developed and cultivated like this, lead to rebirth there.

Tassa te saṅkhārā ca vihārā ca evaṁ bhāvitā evaṁ bahulīkatā tatrupapattiyā saṁvattanti.

33-36.12

This is the path and the practice that leads to rebirth there.

Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, maggo ayaṁ paṭipadā tatrupapattiyā saṁvattati.

Furthermore, take a bhikkhu who has faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom.

‘aho vatāhaṁ āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihareyyan’ti.

37.7

They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of cravings.

So āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati.

37.8

And, bhikkhū, that bhikkhu is not reborn anywhere.”

Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na katthaci upapajjatī”ti.

37.9

That is what the Buddha said.

Satisfied, the bhikkhū were happy with what the Buddha said.
