AN 10.106 Wearing Away – Nijjarasutta

1.1

“Bhikkhū, there are these ten grounds for wearing away.

“Dasayimāni, bhikkhave, nijjaravatthūni.

1.2

What ten?

Katamāni dasa?

1.3

For one of right view, wrong view is worn away.

Sammādiṭṭhikassa, bhikkhave, micchādiṭṭhi nijjiṇṇā hoti;

1.4

And the many bad, unskillful qualities that arise because of wrong view are worn away.

ye ca micchādiṭṭhipaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti te cassa nijjiṇṇā honti;

1.5

And because of right view, many skillful qualities are fully developed.

sammādiṭṭhipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti.

2.1

For one of right thought, wrong thought is worn away.

Sammāsaṅkappassa, bhikkhave, micchāsaṅkappo nijjiṇṇo hoti;

2.2

And the many bad, unskillful qualities that arise because of wrong thought are worn away.

ye ca micchāsaṅkappapaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti te cassa nijjiṇṇā honti;

2.3

And because of right thought, many skillful qualities are fully developed.

sammāsaṅkappapaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti.

3.1

For one of right speech, wrong speech is worn away.

Sammāvācassa, bhikkhave, micchāvācā nijjiṇṇā hoti;

3.2

And the many bad, unskillful qualities that arise because of wrong speech are worn away.

ye ca micchāvācāpaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti te cassa nijjiṇṇā honti;

3.3

And because of right speech, many skillful qualities are fully developed.

sammāvācāpaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti.

4.1

For one of right action, wrong action is worn away.

Sammākammantassa, bhikkhave, micchākammanto nijjiṇṇo hoti;

4.2

And the many bad, unskillful qualities that arise because of wrong action are worn away.

ye ca micchākammantapaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti te cassa nijjiṇṇā honti;

4.3

And because of right action, many skillful qualities are fully developed.

sammākammantapaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti.

5.1

For one of right livelihood, wrong livelihood is worn away.

Sammāājīvassa, bhikkhave, micchāājīvo nijjiṇṇo hoti;

5.2

And the many bad, unskillful qualities that arise because of wrong livelihood are worn away.

ye ca micchāājīvapaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti te cassa nijjiṇṇā honti;

5.3

And because of right livelihood, many skillful qualities are fully developed.

sammāājīvapaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti.

6.1

For one of right effort, wrong effort is worn away.

Sammāvāyāmassa, bhikkhave, micchāvāyāmo nijjiṇṇo hoti;

6.2

And the many bad, unskillful qualities that arise because of wrong effort are worn away.

ye ca micchāvāyāmapaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti te cassa nijjiṇṇā honti;

6.3

And because of right effort, many skillful qualities are fully developed.

sammāvāyāmapaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti.

7.1

For one of right mindfulness, wrong mindfulness is worn away.

Sammāsatissa, bhikkhave, micchāsati nijjiṇṇā hoti;

7.2

And the many bad, unskillful qualities that arise because of wrong mindfulness are worn away.

ye ca micchāsatipaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti te cassa nijjiṇṇā honti;

7.3

And because of right mindfulness, many skillful qualities are fully developed.

sammāsatipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti.

8.1

For one of right samādhi, wrong samādhi is worn away.

Sammāsamādhissa, bhikkhave, micchāsamādhi nijjiṇṇo hoti;

8.2

And the many bad, unskillful qualities that arise because of wrong samādhi are worn away.

ye ca micchāsamādhipaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti te cassa nijjiṇṇā honti;

8.3

And because of right samādhi, many skillful qualities are fully developed.

sammāsamādhipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti.

9.1

For one of right knowledge, wrong knowledge is worn away.

Sammāñāṇissa, bhikkhave, micchāñāṇaṁ nijjiṇṇaṁ hoti;

9.2

And the many bad, unskillful qualities that arise because of wrong knowledge are worn away.

ye ca micchāñāṇapaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti te cassa nijjiṇṇā honti;

9.3

And because of right knowledge, many skillful qualities are fully developed.

sammāñāṇapaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti.

10.1

For one of right freedom, wrong freedom is worn away.

Sammāvimuttissa, bhikkhave, micchāvimutti nijjiṇṇā hoti;

10.2

And the many bad, unskillful qualities that arise because of wrong freedom are worn away.

ye ca micchāvimuttipaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti te cassa nijjiṇṇā honti;

10.3

And because of right freedom, many skillful qualities are fully developed.

sammāvimuttipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti.

11.1

These are the ten grounds for wearing away.”

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dasa nijjaravatthūnī”ti.
