AN 9.2 Supported – Nissayasutta

1.1

Then a bhikkhu went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

1.2

“Sir, they speak of being ‘supported’.

“‘nissayasampanno nissayasampanno’ti, bhante, vuccati.

1.3

How is a bhikkhu who is supported defined?”

Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, bhikkhu nissayasampanno hotī”ti?

1.4

Bhikkhu, if a bhikkhu supported by faith gives up the unskillful and develops the skillful, the unskillful is actually given up by them.

“Saddhañce, bhikkhu, bhikkhu nissāya akusalaṁ pajahati kusalaṁ bhāveti, pahīnamevassa taṁ akusalaṁ hoti.

1.5

If a bhikkhu supported by conscience …

Hiriñce, bhikkhu, bhikkhu nissāya …pe…

1.6

If a bhikkhu supported by prudence …

ottappañce, bhikkhu, bhikkhu nissāya …pe…

1.7

If a bhikkhu supported by energy …

vīriyañce, bhikkhu, bhikkhu nissāya …pe…

1.8

If a bhikkhu supported by wisdom gives up the unskillful and develops the skillful, the unskillful is actually given up by them.

paññañce, bhikkhu, bhikkhu nissāya akusalaṁ pajahati kusalaṁ bhāveti, pahīnamevassa taṁ akusalaṁ hoti.

1.9

What’s been given up is completely given up when it has been given up by seeing with noble wisdom.

Taṁ hissa bhikkhuno akusalaṁ pahīnaṁ hoti suppahīnaṁ, yaṁsa ariyāya paññāya disvā pahīnaṁ.

2.1

But then, a bhikkhu grounded on these five things should rely on four things.

Tena ca pana, bhikkhu, bhikkhunā imesu pañcasu dhammesu patiṭṭhāya cattāro upanissāya vihātabbā.

2.2

What four?

Katame cattāro?

2.3

After appraisal, a bhikkhu uses some things, endures some things, avoids some things, and gets rid of some things.

Idha, bhikkhu, bhikkhu saṅkhāyekaṁ paṭisevati, saṅkhāyekaṁ adhivāseti, saṅkhāyekaṁ parivajjeti, saṅkhāyekaṁ vinodeti.

2.4

That’s how a bhikkhu is supported.”

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhu, bhikkhu nissayasampanno hotī”ti.

2.5

Dutiyaṁ.
